Strokes Strike Calculated Pose – Review

Toward the end of the Strokes’ short set, Julian Casablancas, lead singer of the New York band, looked out over the sweaty, enthusiastic crowd at the Troubadour and smiled. “The last time we were in L.A.,” he said, “we played the Dragonfly. And it was empty.” That was not the case on Saturday. The buzz band of the moment, the Strokes sold out the Troubadour, and ticketless fans were lined up outside the club offering up to $100 for a $10 ticket. All for a band that, to date, has released only two EPs. Those who were able to get… Read more »

Deftones Perform Acoustically On TV

Picture this: A kind of “MTV Unplugged” on The Travel Channel. Then you have an idea of what to expect from “Music In High Places,” airing 10 p.m. EDT Friday on MTV. This week’s outing offers an unusual and entertaining acoustic performance by the Deftones, a band whose ear-shattering, in-your-face music won a best metal Grammy this year. “This is a group that really played into the philosophy of ‘Music In High Places,”‘ said the show’s executive producer, Parvene Michaels. That philosophy was to take the Deftones out of their concert venues, unplug their electrical guitars, microphones and amplifiers and… Read more »

UK Dance Genre Taking Root In U.S.

Word spreads by flyer and e-mail, drawing a small but dedicated corps of young hipsters to a nondescript club on a sleepy, dimly lit street corner. They are in search of deejays spinning a sound so new that some have crossed state lines for their first chance to dance to it. That sound is UK Garage, or Two-step, a dance genre from London’s underground club scene that has crossed the Atlantic – and not just to such likely haunts as New York and San Francisco. It’s also growing in popularity from Washington to Dallas and, in this case, Minneapolis, where… Read more »

Continental Drifters Are Overlooked

Rock-band theme songs went out with the Monkees, but you wouldn’t know that when Susan Cowsill of the Continental Drifters steps to the microphone for “Someday.” It sounds like she’s singing about the very reasons for her band and its work. “I’m gonna pay my bills and stand where I stand,” she sings, “and maybe even start a little rock ‘n’ roll band. And maybe my friends will give me a hand. And if that doesn’t take away my sorrow, I’m gonna get up again and do it tomorrow.” Eyes closed, she holds the last note – bathed in the… Read more »

Watson's Tenor Gets Plenty Of Fans

Had Russell Watson followed some early career advice, the classical tenor might be singing ‘N Sync-like pop tunes instead of arias. “I was told, ‘Oh Russell, join a boy band, leave the opera to the Italians,”‘ the 27-year-old Brit recalls hearing from agents. “That just made me more determined.” His determination has paid off handsomely. Watson, who is not classically trained and who got his start singing Meat Loaf and Lionel Richie songs in the pubs of Manchester, has become an opera sensation with the release of his debut disc, “The Voice.” Already a best-seller in Britain, the album has… Read more »

BT And ‘NSync: Pop Goes The Producer

Former American trance golden boy BT (Brian Transeau) and ‘NSync may seem like odd bedfellows but according to BT, it was all very natural for the two seemingly divergent acts to work together on “Pop,” the first track on ‘NSync’s most recent album, Celebrity (Jive). In fact the love fest was so mutual between the teensters and the Los Angeles based dance producer that BT is now working with Justin Timberlake’s girlfriend, Britney Spears, to help produce her new album – better watch out Justin, BT’s a charmer. If you’ve heard BT’s version of “Pop” you know it sounds a… Read more »

New Order, Corgan Ready

“We’ve got Billy Corgan playing with us, we’re doing a lot of old stuff, new songs that nobody knows, and we’re reaching a lot of young people,” New Order bassist Peter Hook says. “It’s got all the recipe for complete disaster, to be honest.” It’s a week before he and reunited band mates Bernard Sumner (vocals) and Stephen Morris (drums), as well as keyboardist Gillian Gilbert and guest guitarist Corgan, join up with Moby’s Area: One tour for a few dates in the U.S. (beginning Tuesday, July 31st in Mountainview, California). And Hook – who says, “The excitement in Get… Read more »

Despite New Top-10 Record, Kurupt Looking Ahead To Next Disc

“She’s Kobe, and I’m Shaq,” Kurupt said of himself and his fiancée, Blaque’s Natina Reed, on the heels of the Lakers’ championship series win last month. The lovebirds can currently be caught trading verses, Crip-walking and courting each other in the video for Kurupt’s “It’s Over.” The L.A. by way of Philly rapper may be on to something – their duet helped him debut at #10 on the latest Billboard 200 albums chart with Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey. It was just a year ago that the longtime buddies fell in love. As to who made the first move, we’ll probably… Read more »

Review: 'N Sync On Overblown Odyssey

It is a visual overload, this PopOdyssey tour starring the reigning champs of the pop music marketplace, ‘N Sync. There are films and explosions and dancers and mechanical bulls and more costumes than songs – it looks exhausting for performer and young viewer alike. It’s a feast of production values, a sign that every dime went into something the audience can see and, taken collectively, the show is a better marketing tool than a dozen videos. PopOdyssey is flat-out a vehicle to expose new songs to their hard-core audience and give a dynamic and visceral association to the bulk of… Read more »
