No Doubt Head To Jamaica To Stir Up Reggae Sound

When in Jamaica, No Doubt do as the Jamaicans do. The bandmembers are kicking it reggae style as they record their fifth album on the “Island in the Sun.” “[Bassist] Tony [Kanal] and I have been playing tons of crazy, dub-sounding keyboard tracks on all the demos,” guitarist Tom Dumont wrote in an e-mail interview Thursday. Their new duties have resulted in “a noticeable lack of guitar and bass” in the sound, he said. After laying down a handful of tracks in Los Angeles, No Doubt hopped a plane to the Caribbean to collaborate with a few of Jamaica’s renowned… Read more »

Moby Makes Apologies After Reading His Biography

Moby is experiencing a bit of a catharsis after reading the recently released biography on him, Moby>Replay, by Martin James (published by Olmstead Press). Apparently, while reliving his past through the pages of the book, Moby realized his past tendencies of starting beefs with other musicians has made him seem like a jerk, says the artist in a posting on his official Web site on Thursday (March 29) at www.moby-online.com. Aphex Twin and Orbital are two of the acts to which Moby apologizes for antagonizing. He also thanks those who have stuck with him through his career. Here is what… Read more »

The record industry plans to turn up the heat on Napster. An RIAA spokesperson told Reuters Thursday that the organization will file a court complaint accusing the file-sharing service of failing to comply with a recently revised injunction requiring the removal of copyrighted songs. “It’s clear that Napster is not complying with the court’s order,” RIAA spokesperson Jano Cabera told the news service. Panel: Artists Struggling For Success

Hard economic times are forcing music artists to become more self-sufficient in their efforts to find success in mainstream markets. That was one of the harsh realities coming out of “The View From the Helm,” a high-powered panel session Thursday at the South by Southwest music conference. The most outspoken of the panelists, Ark 21 president Miles Copeland III, argued that artists need to help themselves break into the marketplace because the record companies no longer have the budgets or staffs to do all the work. “Artists have to realize that the label will be a small part of their… Read more »

Napster Filtering Hits Snags As Users Try To Outwit System

File-sharing service attempts to comply with court order, but downloaders concoct ways to avoid blocks. Despite Napster’s promise to do everything in its power to comply with a court order to remove copyrighted songs from its system this week, users can still find – and download – plenty of tunes by Metallica and other artists. And those users are working just as hard, if not harder, to foil Napster’s efforts. Napster won’t say how many songs it has already filtered, but searches for top-selling artists such as Joe, ‘N Sync, Britney Spears and Eminem all turned up dozens of matches… Read more »

Sporty Spice To Pull Out Of Spice Girls?

Melanie Chisholm, aka Sporty Spice, told Reuters Thursday she does not plan to keep working with Britain’s biggest pop phenomenon since the Beatles and will instead focus on her burgeoning solo career. Her decision could effectively mark the death knell for a mega-selling act whose rallying cry of “Girl Power!” reverberated around the world when they burst on the scene six years ago. While Chisholm specifically said twice in the interview that she no longer planned to work with the group, a Spice Girls spokesman insisted to the BBC that the group was still together. Chisholm, 27, who is widely… Read more »

Napster Push For Rosenbergs

Napster Inc. has entered into a promotion deal with pop-rock band the Rosenbergs and will sponsor their North American tour, the company said Thursday. In what Napster calls a “bold marketing move that lifts the concept of music sharing from the digital arena and returns it to the streets,” the file-swapping company will finance 10,000 extra copies of the Rosenbergs’ “Mission: You.” When the album hits stores Feb. 20, the 10,000 CDs will be bundled with the original as a two-for-one sale. Napster’s copy of the album will bear the Napster logo and a message: “Support Napster, share the music… Read more »
