Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington will seek treatment for a poisonous spider bite he received on August 8 at a hotel in the Boston area (Mansfield, Massachusetts) while on OzzFest tour. A management representative said that people who are bit by a Recluse Spider usually require hospitalization. The end of the tour couldn’t have come at a better time. Guitarist Brad… Read more »

MTV Marks 20th Birthday With Party

In the years since August 1, 1981, when MTV first went on air by broadcasting a song presciently called “Video Killed the Radio Star,” the cable channel has helped to turn musicians as different as Duran Duran, Guns ‘N’ Roses, Tupac Shakur, Marilyn Manson, and Britney Spears into cultural touchstones. MTV helped to mainstream rap music and to pioneer the trend toward reality television with shows like The Real World. And the channel has been at the center of any number of pop culture brouhahas, whether involving cartoon bad boys Beavis and Butt-head, sexually provocative and spiritually outrageous videos by… Read more »

Napster Users Write Eulogy As Service Goes Dark

Napster’s legally challenged song-swap service went dark last week and sentiment among many former users grew even darker. Napster suspended file-sharing July 2 for a self-imposed shutdown as it battled technical glitches related to its latest upgrade, which is intended to help it comply with a court order barring it from offering copyrighted material on its service. No time for a resumption had yet been given as of Sunday. Many habitual music downloaders seemed to agree that Napster’s latest technical woes were the nail in the coffin of the once phenomenally popular service. “Napster was dead six months ago.
