Forrester Sees $2 Bln Digital Music Market by 2007

Video may have killed the radio star, but Forrester Research on Tuesday said Internet piracy was not to blame – as record labels have claimed – for the 15 percent drop in music sales in the past two years. “There is no denying that times are tough for the music business, but not because of downloading,” said Josh Bernoff, principal analyst at Cambridge, Massachusetts-based research firm Forrester Research Inc., who released a report on the digital music market. Based on surveys of 1,000 U.S. online consumers, Forrester said it sees no evidence of decreased CD buying among frequent digital music… Read more »

DJ Suspended for Kidnap Remark

A San Jose radio personality was suspended after joking about the kidnapping of a 7-year-old Philadelphia girl who escaped her kidnappers by chewing through duct tape. After a sidekick read the news item Wednesday about the girl, shock jock “Mikey” Esparza of KSJO-FM said, “That’s why I don’t use duct tape. That’s why I use nylon rope.” Esparza also suggested that kidnappers buy tarps and use lye to dispose of murder victims. The station suspended Esparza on Thursday for a week and broadcast a formal apology. His show, “The Mikey Show” is also heard in San Diego and Dallas.

2Na But No Neptunes On Linkin Park Remix LP – Here's Why

Since their inception, Linkin Park have made it clear that they are neither rap nor rock but an evolved hybrid of both. Their debut album contained elements of the once-opposing genres, though it retained decidedly rock roots. But on Reanimation, a “reinterpretation” of their Hybrid Theory tracks due July 30, the group trades most of its rock riffs for meaty beats, effectively proving that the line dividing the two genres was barely noticeable to begin with. “We all started in L.A.,” explained MC Mike Shinoda, “from a musical background where you’ve got a lot of things going on at once.… Read more »

Pharoahe Monch On Appearing On Linkin Park's 'Reanimation'

Pharoahe Monch is among the All-Star lineup of MCs featured on Linkin Park’s remix album, Reanimation, due out on July 30 on Warner Bros. Pharoahe appears on the song “H! VLtg3″ with Dilated Peoples members Evidence, who remixed the song, and DJ Babu, who adds turntable scratching. While many artists tend to get involved with projects only after other respected acts have been confirmed, Pharoahe said that the lineup did not influence his decision to participate on the alternative rock/hip-hop band’s album. At first when they came to me with my individual song, I wasn’t aware of who else would… Read more »

Jackson's Attack on Sony Sparks Limited Sympathy

Michael Jackson’s surprise attack on Sony Music as racist has grabbed headlines, but many in the music industry have turned a deaf ear – suspecting the pop star has been motivated by self-interest rather than a concern for civil rights. Jackson, under contract with Sony until 2004 and among the highest-paid pop stars of all time, appears to be trying to pressure Sony into breaking the deal so he can exit with his valuable trove of master recordings, industry sources said. They say Jackson’s assault was prompted mostly by anger at Sony for the poor showing of his latest album,… Read more »

Linkin Park Master Reanimation But Kant Spell

Linkin Park’s Reanimation is one step closer to coming to life. The album, consisting mainly of new versions of tracks from the group’smultiplatinum 2000 debut, Hybrid Theory, has gone through the mastering stage, and a final track list has been settled upon, according to the band’s manager. The 20-track LP is due July 30. Linkin Park are the prototypical rap-rock hybrid (in fact, the group’s original name was Hybrid Theory), and Reanimation doesn’t do anything to change their stance on crossbreeding genres. While Hybrid Theory employed looped beats, scratching and other DJ techniques, courtesy of Joseph Hahn, Reanimation puts a… Read more »

Red Hot Chili Peppers Lack Spark At Secret London Gig – Review

England is gripped by a heady patriotic fervor these days – between the England team’s highly anticipated appearances in the 2002 World Cup and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, you can barely move without seeing a flag or banner. Yet the Brits still seem to have a little fervor left over for their American cousins, especially when those Americans happen to be the Red Hot Chili Peppers. When the Chilis took the stage for a “secret” club gig at the Garage in London on Friday (May 31), the primarily invite-only crowd erupted with an enthusiasm normally reserved for a winning goal… Read more »
