Hoobastank Glad-Hand, 311 Toast And Rooster Strut At Emerald City – Review

Hoobastank opened their spring tour with 311 Monday with all the stage presence and salesmanship of a band bursting to ditch its warm-up act status. During their 45-minute set at the Paramount Theatre, singer Douglas Robb glad-handed the crowd at the front of the stage, hyped an upcoming show on a bill with Incubus and reminded the audience of his band’s name not once, not twice, but four times. (As if you forget a handle like Hoobastank.) “That was lovely,” Robb declared after several songs. It was a surprisingly Martha Stewart-ish term for a band pounding out kick-to-the-head mosh music.… Read more »

Oasis will stage two huge open air concerts in London this summer, the band said Tuesday. Noel and Liam Gallagher will take the stage in front of up to 120,000 people at Finsbury Park in north London on July 5 and 6. “These are the biggest concerts they have played since July 2000 when they did a UK stadium tour,” a spokeswoman for the band told Reuters. The band will be supported by UK indie band The Charlatans and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the Californian rock group. The Gallagher brothers will hope the concerts shift the spotlight to their music… Read more »

Members Of Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity Are Down Again

When a “supergroup” finds success, it often leads to rumblings about whether the bandmembers are going to leave their bread-and-butter outfits to focus on their new baby. Especially when the musicians start griping. For example, during recent interviews about their side project Down, Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown have been questioning the longevity of Pantera and confirming that the band is on shore leave. “With the last record, we were kind of like, ‘That’s the best we can f–in’ get it. What are we gonna do now?’ ” Brown said, relaxing in a deluxe hotel suite in… Read more »

Online Radio Facing Possible Extinction

Conventional radio stations have long paid for the right to broadcast artists’ music. A system for Internet radio stations to do the same has been fought over for some time now, and while a government panel’s recommendation that online radio broadcasters pay royalty fees to recording companies finally gives artists some coin for their worldwide works, the ruling could also spell the end of some Internet broadcasters. A Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel (CARP) filed a report to the U.S. Copyright Office on Wednesday, suggesting that conventional radio stations that stream their broadcasts online should pay 0.07 of a cent per… Read more »

Napster given right to explore who owns the music

Napster Inc. can investigate whether the five major labels own the rights to songs they say the music-swapping service infringes, a judge ruled yesterday after settlement talks in the case broke down. U.S. District Judge Marilyn Patel last month postponed Napster’s pursuit of the issue after the company and the Recording Industry Association of America, which represents AOL Time Warner Inc., Sony Corp., Bertelsmann AG, EMI Group PLC and Vivendi Universal, asked for 30 days of settlement discussions. “That stay has now ended, and the parties have advised the court that they are unable to resolve their disputes,” Patel wrote… Read more »

'N Sync's Bass in Talks for Space Trip

Lance Bass could be going from ‘N Sync to in space. The boy band member is negotiating to travel on a Russian rocket for a mission in November, according to MirCorp, the Amsterdam-based space travel company. Bass said in a statement Wednesday that he was “completely overwhelmed.” “I’m looking forward to completing this lifelong dream,” he said. The plan still requires the approval of the Russian space agency, Rosaviakosmos, according to MirCorp, which also plans to build the first private space station. The partners in the international space station program – the United States, Russia, Japan, Canada and Europe –… Read more »

'Rocket Man' Elton John Laments Pap Pop

“Rocket Man” Elton John rued on Wednesday the thrust for instant success among undistinguished and indistinguishable modern pre-fabricated pop bands. “It is like packets of cereal. There are too many of them, and too many of them are just average and mediocre,” he told BBC television in an interview filmed during his current tour in the United States. “It is just fodder. It doesn’t sound. It has no distinguishing marks. A lot of it you can’t tell one from the other. There is too much of it, just too much of it,” the high-spending flamboyant rock legend lamented. The 54-year-old… Read more »

Phantom Planet – More Than Just 'That Band With The "Rushmore" Guy'

When they first came on the scene, Southern California quintet Phantom Planet were best, if incorrectly, known as the side project of Jonathan Schwartzman, the teen actor who played smug genius Max Fischer in 1998’s “Rushmore.” But Schwartzman formed Phantom Planet with his buddies in 1994, four years before the group released their debut, Phantom Planet Is Missing. So chronologically, Schwartzman has really been moonlighting as an actor for the past several years. Still, because of the band’s movie star drummer and the debut album’s penchant for juvenile lovelorn anthems, Phantom Planet were often given the same knee-jerk dismissal bestowed… Read more »
