Are limits in MP3s and iPods ruining pop music?

If it seems like you are listening to music more but enjoying it less, some people in the recording industry say they know why. They blame that iPod that you can’t live without, along with all the compressed MP3 music files you’ve loaded on it. Those who work behind-the-mic in the music industry — producers, engineers, mixers and the like — say they increasingly assume their recordings will be heard as MP3s on an iPod music player. That combination is thus becoming the “reference platform” used as a test of how a track should sound. (Movie makers make much the… Read more »

Brad Paisley video to be shot in W.Va.

Brad Paisley will return to his West Virginia hometown to shoot his latest video. “He’s proud of his West Virginia roots,” his father, Doug Paisley, told West Virginia Public Broadcasting. The video is for the song “Letter to Me,” from the 34-year-old country singer’s new album, “5th Gear.” It’s about what Paisley would write to himself if he could send a letter back in time to when he was 17. It includes advice on romantic relationships, dating, studying and driving. Paisley is inviting some of his classmates from John Marshall High School to be in the video. He graduated in… Read more »

Tommy Lee Digs "Kid Pebble"

Tommy Lee thinks the media is making a mountain out of a molehill. So, he’s making a pebble out of Kid Rock. The Mötley Crüe drummer wasted no time in addressing his well publicized brawl and subsequent ousting from the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night, insisting that while he has been painted in the press as the instigating party, it was fellow Pamela Anderson ex Kid Rock who initiated the throwdown. “Yeah!!….here I am minding my own biz having a great time with my friend Criss Angel (magician) and watching the MTV awards in the front row saying hello… Read more »

2007 MTV Video Music Awards: A new definition of suck

I thought about being nicer in the title of the article, but it is simply the truth. MTV tried to re-invent the awards show this year and managed to make it worse. The VMAs were moved to Las Vegas this year to try to add some new flavor to the beleaguered show. The idea was to have bands hosting parties in different rooms at the Palms. The show would cut between the main stage where presentations were made and the party rooms. Fall Out Boy, Kanye West, Foofighters and others performed from the parties. That was the best part of… Read more »

Atreyu Enter Billboard At #8

Atreyu’s Lead Sails Paper Anchor rocketed onto Billboard’s Top 200 this week at No. 8, and Billboard’s Rock and Hard Rock Album charts at No. 1, making it the highest-charting album of the band’s career. The debut is also significant in that Atreyu distinguish themselves as one among a very short list of hard rock acts to have debuted in the Top 10 this year. News of the album’s explosive arrival follows a flurry of headline-making moves for Atreyu, who were recently named as a headliner on one of the biggest tours of the new year: “Rockstar Taste of Chaos… Read more »

How "Guitar Hero" saved guitar music

Early in July, Rusty Shaffer, the founder of Optek, a small music company in Reno, Nev., visited Salon’s offices to show me his invention, the Fretlight guitar. Though it looks and feels like a standard, rock ‘n’ roll-ready instrument, the Fretlight contains a set of LEDs invisibly embedded inside its fretboard — connect the guitar to a computer and the lights spark up to indicate where to put your fingers in order to play a chord. Shaffer is certain that his guitar is a great leap forward for the normally tech-averse guitar industry; the Fretlight, he says, will transform guitar… Read more »

Universal to sell songs without copy protection

Vivendi’s Universal Music Group, the world’s largest music label, on Thursday said it will test the sale of songs from artists such as Amy Winehouse, 50 Cent and the Black Eyed Peas, without customary copy-protection technology. The company said in a statement it will allow the sale of thousands of its albums and tracks available in MP3-form without copy-protection software, known as digital rights management, over a trial period. Universal’s test-run marks a departure from the music industry’s common practice, with most major recording studios insisting that music sellers use DRM technology to curb online piracy. “The experiment will run… Read more »
