This just hasn’t been the Barenaked Ladies’ year. First, cofounder Steven Page gets busted for drugs. Now this. BNL’s lead singer and principal songwriter, Ed Robertson, and three others narrowly averted disaster Sunday, walking away unscathed from a float-plane crash near Bancroft, Ontario. According to the Intelligencer of Belleville, Ontario, Robertson was at the controls of a Cessna 206 when a gust of wind caused the plane to stall, forcing him to put down in a wooded area near the resort of Baptiste Lake. “Everyone is fine and that is the important thing,” Barenaked Ladies rep Adam Smith told the… Read more »
More than ever, it pays to be pregnant in Hollywood. Jennifer Lopez, about to give birth to twins, is reportedly the latest A-lister to strike a deal worth millions for exclusive photos of her children. And the incentive might not be purely financial: Such pacts can also protect celebs’ privacy by thwarting the paparazzi. Those involved in negotiations for Lopez and her husband, Marc Anthony, confirmed that U.S. and Latin American rights were sold to People magazine and other international rights to OK! magazine. Advertising Age reported on its Web site Monday that Lopez and Anthony were negotiating with People… Read more »
Heath Ledger, the Australian-born actor whose breakthrough role as a gay cowboy in the 2005 movie “Brokeback Mountain” earned him a nomination for an Academy Award and comparisons to the likes of Marlon Brando, was found dead Tuesday in an apartment in Manhattan with sleeping pills near his body, the police said. The police said Mr. Ledger, 28, was found naked on the floor near the bed in an apartment in SoHo that he had been renting. The chief police spokesman, Paul J. Browne, said the police did not suspect foul play. “There was no indication of a disturbance,” he… Read more »
Just when it seemed erosion of music sales during the holiday season couldn’t get worse, December snowstorms compounded the retail industry’s misery. Album sales for 2007 are now down 15.3% for the year, compared with 2006. But for the four weeks beginning with Thanksgiving week and ending December 26, U.S. album sales were down 20% to 84.2 million units from 105.3 million a year ago, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The last week before Christmas didn’t help matters much, with sales totaling 25.6 million vs. 31.3 million units in the same period last year. The season got off on the wrong… Read more »
Busta Rhymes was sued in New York State Supreme Court on Monday by a Bronx man who alleges he was roughed up by The Big Bang rapper and his posse last summer after spitting on Rhymes’ SUV. The plaintiff, Roberto LeBron, 20, claims he was repeatedly punched and kicked in the body and face by the 35-year-old Rhymes during the wee hours of Aug. 12 as the hip-hopster’s nine bodyguards stood by and watched. LeBron was treated at a nearby medical center for a concussion, split lip and injury to his wrist and later released. Rhymes, whose real name is… Read more »
CForget winning an Oscar, Grammy or, while we’re at it, even “American Idol.” You’re nobody until someone burns your image into a piece of toast. Controversial “Idol” semifinalist Antonella Barba joined Jesus, Mary and other members of that rarified group recently when someone posted on eBay a piece of Wonder Bread with a crudely rendered picture of the Jersey girl. It cemented Barba’s status as the most famous mediocre singing star on the planet … for this week . It was a refreshing break from the nonstop deluge of risqué Barba photos – real and fake – that were posted… Read more »
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Brad Pitt is among the A-list celebrities featured in new public service announcements for a campaign led by U2 singer Bono to fight poverty and AIDS. The campaign was not immediately asking for donations but simply raising awareness and recruiting new advocates, Bono said Wednesday at an event announcing the public service announcements “We’re not just asking for people to put cash in the pot here,” Bono said. “Americans are generous, we know they’ll do that. We’re not actually asking for their money, we’re asking for their voice.” Pitt, who visited Africa after being inspired by… Read more »
New York – It’s not the lineup for an awards show or a tsunami relief concert. It’s the list of guest stars on Thursday’s episode of “The Apprentice.” Lil’ Kim, Eve, Fat Joe, Barenaked Ladies, Moby, Gene Simmons, Lil’ John, Simple Plan, New Found Glory and Jadakiss were solicited by the 10 remaining candidates on Donald Trump’s reality show to donate and auction off a personal experience live on Fuse. “It was funny to watch them come in with very limited viewpoints about being a VJ and try to pull it off,” said Fuse video jockey Steven Smith. Smith, who… Read more »
