Automator Talks Gorillaz Tour

Cartoon hip-hop/popsters Gorillaz are going on tour, confirming nine North American stops, beginning February 23rd in Toronto, in support of their platinum self-titled debut. Which begs the obvious question, how? “It will definitely involve big movie screens and lights,” says the band’s producer Dan “The Automator” Nakamura. “The musicians will be behind the screens and backlit onto them. Two-dimensional figures have problems when projected because they get distorted – so it’s a matter of making it look good.” Gorillaz – which also features the artwork of Tank Girl creator Jamie Hewlett and the vocals of Blur’s Damon Albern, Cibo Matto’s… Read more »

CBS plans to re-broadcast the singer’s concert special, “Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration,” with previously unseen footage of Britney Spears and Lil’ Romeo, to air against the AMAs on ABC January 9th. Jackson’s two-hour concert special, which originally aired November 13th, gave CBS some of its highest ratings this year – it was the network’s biggest Tuesday night, excluding sports programming, since 1994. According to Nielsen Media Research estimates, an estimated 45… Read more »

Fur Flies Between Britney And PETA

Britney Spears was to appear in an anti-fur poster for PETA, but after word got out, first in Wednesday’s New York Post, that implied the pop princess would appear naked – like previous PETA spokesmodels Pamela Anderson, Melissa Etheridge and current poster girl, actress Dominique Swain (“Lolita”) – the fur really began to fly and Spears scratched all association with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. “Contrary to what has been widely reported, Britney Spears was never going to appear in a PETA poster undressed,” her spokesperson said in a statement. The statement also claimed that Spears would… Read more »

Court Dismisses Professor's Case Against RIAA

Free speech advocated are concerned that a pair of court decisions in New York and New Jersey could lay groundwork to deny U.S. citizens the same free speech rights on the Internet that they enjoy in the physical world. Both cases involve issues stemming from the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), a law designed to protect copyright holders by prohibiting the creation of technology that can be used to circumvent copyright protections. In one ruling, a New Jersey federal court dismissed a lawsuit brought on behalf of Princeton University researcher Edward Felten, who said they were pressured by the… Read more »

DMCA Seen Denying Free Speech Rights in Cyberspace

Two court decisions considered victories for the film and music industries could deny U.S. citizens the same free speech rights in cyberspace that they have in the real world, according to copyright experts and civil rights activists. A federal appeals court in New York last week ruled that the controversial 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act – which bars creating or distributing technology that can be used to circumvent copyright protections – does not infringe on First Amendment free speech protections of the U.S. Constitution. The court barred Eric Corley, publisher of hacker Web site 2600 magazine, from posting or linking… Read more »

Jagger Pokes At British Royals In TV Special

Sir Mick Jagger? The Rolling Stones frontman seems to think that should be the case, especially since some of his peers have been knighted, including Paul McCartney and Elton John. In the documentary Being Mick that airs on Thanksgiving Day on ABC, Jagger expresses a bit of irritation that he’s never received any sort of title from his homeland-in one segment he imitates Britain’s Prince Charles, adopting a haughty accent as he affects the prince saying, “Is it true you haven’t got anything at all? That is rather odd, isn’t it?” Being Mick is part of the promotional campaign for… Read more »
