Virgin Records America Marks The Summer With Breakthroughs From Seven New Artists

Hot on the heels of new releases from such established superstars as Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey, Virgin Records America is releasing seven key albums from developing artists the label hopes will follow in those multi-platinum footsteps. Sunny Day Real Estate Close

After nine on-and-off years, Emo-rock trailblazers Sunny Day Real Estate have called it quits. The band had been at work on the follow-up to last year’s The Rising Tide but, because of business woes, has decided not to continue. According to the band’s statement on its official Web site (www.sunnydayrealestate.net), a “string of bad luck” with management companies and Arista Records ceasing to distribute the band’s label Time Bomb Recordings made a “European tour and advertising for a new album near impossible. As frustrations built, progress on the new album became stagnant at times. Not wanting to build personal tensions,”… Read more »

Depeche Mode Gears Up For New World Tour

Depeche Mode, the influential British technopop band that flourished in the 1980s, kicks off a five-month tour in Canada this week with a new album and what one founding member said is a hard-earned feeling of serenity. “It is the first time for a long, long time, in about 15 years probably, that all three members of Depeche Mode are happy and stable in their private and working lives,” keyboardist Andrew Fletcher, 39, told Reuters in an interview. “It is enjoyable to be in Depeche Mode at the moment, and I would not have said that five years ago.” Fletcher,… Read more »

Stone Temple Pilots Blast Off For New Video

Stone Temple Pilots are vying to be the first band in space. They donned red astronaut suits on Thursday for their “Days of the Week” video, in which they play door-to-door salesmen who escape their monotonous lives by blasting into space and rocking out on an unidentified planet. “Who looks better in a spacesuit – me or Ben Affleck?” singer Scott Weiland joked during a break, referring to the actor’s astronaut role in the 1998 film “Armageddon.” The “Days of the Week” clip, directed by Kevin Kerslake – who also helmed STP’s “Interstate Love Song” and “Vasoline” videos – opens… Read more »

Maybe they should call themselves Rage Against the Soundgarden. The band does not have a name yet, but it will not be called Rage Against the Machine. “Rage Against the Machine… Read more »

Former Beatle Paul McCartney was quoted on Thursday as saying there was a good chance he would wed his girlfriend Heather Mills. “I may get married again, but that is a decision we will make in private and only then will we make it public,” McCartney was reported by British newspapers to have said at the Cannes Film Festival in France. “It is quite embarrassing when people come up to me in the street and say congratulations. I can say here and now we are not engaged but there is a good chance I will get married in the future.”… Read more »

Stones' Svengali Recounts Street Fighting Days

Long before gun-toting rap stars roamed America, the first manager of the Rolling Stones was terrorizing “Swinging” London, throwing errant journalists out of windows and others off bridges. Accompanied by a thuggish bodyguard, teenage pop Svengali Andrew Loog Oldham was said to be quite the rogue 40 years ago: Sporting a cape, he would careen around the city in his Mini Cooper, speakers blaring from the roof of the tiny car. This is not all completely true – especially the bit about the cape – but the anecdotes and rumors metamorphosed into “facts” over the years, a consequence of the… Read more »
