Green Day Taking My Chemical Romance On Tour This Spring

The American Idiot version of Green Day has been garnering headlines (and Grammy noms) thanks to a newfound political bite and some musical risk-taking, but no one has really taken notice of the band’s sudden sartorial flair: skinny ties, mod suits and eyeliner – lots of it. All that eyeliner could be one reason why they’ve taken such a shine to New Jersey goth-punk quintet My Chemical Romance, with their dark suits and ringed eyes. The admiration is so intense that the guys from Green Day asked MCR to open for them on a leg of their next round of… Read more »

No Rest For Yellowcard

It’s been more than a year since Yellowcard released their major-label debut, Ocean Avenue. And in the time since the album first slipped onto shelves, it has sold almost 1.3 million copies, spawned three hit singles and become a long-term resident in the Billboard Top 200. And now they’ve got to figure out a way to top all that. The big question is: When will they find the time? The band is currently in the final stages of a massive world tour that wraps up on Saturday in Irvine, California. But it’s not like they’re going to relax once the… Read more »

Green Day Keep Crowd Fighting – Review

Toronto – Perhaps it was best that Green Day were in Canada on the evening of the U.S. presidential election; after all, it’s here that they can share the almost unanimous anti-Bush sentiments in an almost-packed Air Canada Centre. “Well, hopefully tomorrow we’ll have a brand new President,” Billie Joe Armstrong said to a roar of cheers. “I fuckin’ hate him and I think he’s more of a threat to the world than Saddam Hussein.” And though the dads of pop-punk were away from home, the enthusiastic crowd – which included one fan with a “Fuck Bush” sign – made… Read more »

How Green Day's Dookie Fertilized A Punk-Rock Revival

Green Day will toast the release of American Idiot on Tuesday, but perhaps an even bigger cause for celebration these days is the 10-year anniversary of their breakthrough LP, Dookie. The modern-day classic not only launched the Bay Area punk trio into the mainstream, it opened the door to a mid-’90s wave of popped-up punk and provided a launching pad for the current crop of melodic pop-punkers. “[Dookie] changed my life,” confessed Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden. “It made me want to start Good Charlotte…. Right after that record came out, we were like, ‘We have to start a band in… Read more »

Without a ticket, TV is the closest you'll get to the VMAs

If you don’t have a ticket, you might as well share that outfit with your TV. Seats for MTV’s 21st Video Music Awards have all been sold or given away. And without a ticket, you’re not going to get anywhere near the red carpet, which is in a park behind AmericanAirlines arena. Rest assured that security is going to be the tightest this side of the Republican National Convention. And don’t think you’re going to be able to see it by sea, either: Some celebrities are arriving on a dozen or so yachts, and the Coast Guard will be keeping… Read more »

Green Day Walk "Idiot"

Green Day will preview its forthcoming album, American Idiot, in its entirety on a short run of club dates beginning in Los Angeles on September 16th. The four-date tour will also visit Chicago on September 18th, New York on the 21st and Toronto on the 24th. The band has called the thirteen-track Idiot a “punk rock opera,” a concept album that includes “Jesus of Suburbia,” a nine-minute song broken into chapters with separate titles. “A band that’s known for the perfect two-minute song is now writing nine-minute epics,” singer Billy Joe Armstrong told Rolling Stone in May. “It’s scary to… Read more »

Finch: Emotion Is Their Middle Name

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Up until that point, my interview with two-fifths of Temecula, California’s Finch was going rather smoothly. That is, of course, until I mentioned the “E” word. Suddenly, I struck a nerve. “We’re not ‘emo’,” says guitarist Randy Strohmeyer wearily. “People can call us whatever they want to help them identify with the music because when it comes down to it, it’s just the music anyway.” He pauses for a moment, before adding: “But if you ask us, we don’t really care. We don’t call ourselves anything besides a rock band because our… Read more »
