Ozzfest Ranks As A Top Concert Draw

When the wife of heavy metal god Ozzy Osbourne came up with the idea of a tour featuring the heavy hitters of metal and hard rock, the reaction from the concert industry was lukewarm, at best. “In my gut feeling, I felt that it would definitely work, because there was a huge void in the marketplace for it,” Sharon Osbourne recalled. “Not a lot of people in the market agreed with me at the time.” Certainly, no one can disagree with her now. Ozzfest, now in its sixth year, has consistently ranked as one of the top concert draws of… Read more »

STP Make Surprise Appearance At Weenie Roast

This ninth edition of the KROQ Weenie Roast, which saw the annual all-day charity festival return to its traditional Irvine home after it was held in Anaheim last year, was largely divided into distinct segments representing two contrasting sides of modern rock music. There were the angry young hard rock bands (Disturbed, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, Crazytown), who toiled under the hot afternoon sun, and the superior veteran headliners (Jane’s Addiction, Blink-182, 311, surprise guests Stone Temple Pilots), who brought the better music and benefited from their post-sunset show times. Occupying a mid-day space somewhere between those groupings was the… Read more »

Tom Petty Gets Hitched

Tom Petty and his longtime girlfriend, Dana York, were married on June 3 in Las Vegas, following the head Heartbreaker’s two sold-out shows at the Hard Rock Hotel on June 1st and 2nd. According to Petty’s rep, the musician, his bride and a few close family and friends remained in Sin City for their wedding on Sunday. Following the rather low-key ceremony (no, they were not married by an Elvis impersonator), the rather raucous party of twenty descended on Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Las Vegas to celebrate. Petty superfans can even order a copy of the wedding certificate for a… Read more »

AC/DC'S Angus Young Spotted In Miniskirt

The scene onstage at Jimmy Z’s is unmistakable: the singer is screeching “Sin City,” right hand on the mic, left hand cocked at the side like it might just fire bullets from the fingers drawn in a heavy metal devil salute. Several feet away, the guitarist’s head is in a non-stop nod to the beat; a schoolboy necktie squirms under a burgundy Gibson SG. Uh, but wait a minute… this Angus Young is wearing a miniskirt. And the person rocking the spotlight isn’t a middle-aged Aussie man, but a twentysomething African-American woman. Ding dong, welcome to the world of Hell’s… Read more »

Stabbing Westward Survives Label Change

After six years and two modestly successful albums, the members of the hard rock band Stabbing Westward had every reason to be surprised when their label, Columbia, pulled the plug in 1999 – the day before the quintet was to leave for Hawaii to make a new album with producer Bob Rock. “It was out of nowhere,” says frontman Chris Hall. “All of a sudden they decided they needed to fund more money towards Ricky Martin’s wardrobe and dropped 12 bands in one day; ‘This rock thing doesn’t seem to be working out for us. We’ll keep Offspring and let… Read more »

Aerosmith Car To Race In Indy 500

After Aerosmith belter Steven Tyler opens this year’s Indy 500 by singing the national anthem, veteran driver Jeff Ward will slip behind the wheel of the Heritage Motorsports’ Aerosmith “Screaming Demon” car and race against the rest of the field. While various hard rockers including Incubus, Mudvayne, System of a Down, Crazy Town and Dope have had their logos affixed to numerous NASCAR vehicles over the past two years, this marks the first time an Indy 500 race car includes the image of a rock band, a Heritage publicist said. The Aerosmith vehicle will be decorated with a pink and… Read more »
