It's Justin Timberlake Gone Wild At Late-Night Club Show – Review

A good bar band singer knows the importance of conversing with the patrons. “Did you come to have fun?” Justin Timberlake asked after taking the House of Blues stage early Tuesday morning (June 17) for his first crack at what he’s dubbed the Show After the Show. “The point of this is to have fun.” And fun it was, yet it certainly seemed there were other reasons for JT – as he was billed – to play a club show a few hours after the lights went up on the Justified and Stripped Tour at the Staples Center. Mainly, the… Read more »

Has America Changed Its Mind? Clay Beats Ruben On Singles Chart

This is the night for Clay Aiken, not May 21, when Ruben Studdard edged him out to win “American Idol.” On Wednesday (June 18), the former Raleigh, North Carolina, student had to like what he saw in what is perhaps a more accurate reading of America’s pop-music radar – his trouncing of the Velvet Teddy Bear on the singles chart. Aiken’s “This Is the Night”/”Bridge Over Troubled Water” single sold 392,975 copies last week, according to SoundScan, beating Studdard’s “Flying Without Wings”/”Superstar” by about 107,000 copies. Interestingly, Ruben won the “American Idol” competition by about 130,000 votes. Both finalists are… Read more »

Radiohead To Release DVD

Radiohead will release a new DVD titled 7 Television Commercials in Canada on August 5. The DVD is a compilation of videos filmed through 1997’s OK Computer, said bassist Colin Greenwood. It features “Paranoid Android,” “Fake Plastic Trees,” and “Karma Police,” among other clips. Greenwood was asked if he had different thoughts on the videos now that he’s got some distance from when the videos were first released in the ’90s. He said he’s always trusted video directors. “It’s always good to work with directors with strong visions whose work you like, and who you really want to work on… Read more »

Aggressive Start for Metallica's 'Anger'

With two fewer selling days than most releases have when they hit the charts, rock stalwart Metallica manages an opening-week sum larger than that which greeted its last album in 1999. The band’s new St. Anger thus leads the Billboard 200 for the week ended June 8, marking the fourth straight week – and the seventh time in the past 11 – that a rock album has topped the chart. The shorter selling window came as a result of the decision by the band’s U.S. label Elektra and distributor WEA to shift the album’s release date from June 10 to… Read more »

Pink Teams With Transplants, Good Charlotte Unplug For Weenie Roast – Review

Liam Lynch was onstage about two minutes total, yet it was his song that best summed up Saturday’s 11-hour KROQ Weenie Roast. It was truly the “United States of Whatever.” As in, whatever goes. Good Charlotte unplugged, Pink got the party started with the Transplants, and Jane’s Addiction played unannounced, proving nothing was off-limits at the trend-setting radio station’s 11th annual summer festival. The lineup itself was a little bit of whatever, and certainly more diverse than last year’s “diet Ozzfest,” as Jack Osbourne called it. All three stages showcased a variety of bands, although it was surprisingly the main… Read more »

Courtney Love’s search for a new label is almost over. The rocker is in advanced negotiations to sign with EMI’s Virgin Records, sources said. If the deal is closed, Virgin will release Love’s first solo album since the breakup of her former group, Hole. Sources said the new album includes numerous songs Love co-wrote with Linda Perry of 4 Non Blondes, who also has collaborated with Pink. An EMI spokeswoman declined comment; Love’s manager David Lory was unreachable at press time. Love’s most recent studio album was Hole’s 1998 “Celebrity Skin,” which sold multiplatinum. Christina Does Her Cher Impression, Justin Fights The Screams At Tour Kickoff – Review

With ice on both ears, Justin Timberlake set out to prove that on his own he can accomplish the mission that was set for ‘NSYNC – to generate a little respect for pop. On Wednesday, the crowd at the sold-out America West Arena turned the venue into a balls-out dance club for the opening night of Timberlake and Christina Aguilera’s Justified and Stripped Tour. The fans, most of whom were women in their late teens and early 20s, screamed at Justin and Christina’s every move and word. Aguilera’s set began with images of her on a video screen showing her… Read more »

During “On My Own,” the first and only song the Used played for a radio station concert in Cincinnati on May 27, vocalist Bert McCracken slumped to the ground, where he lay unable to sing. Then he apologized to the crowd and staggered offstage. McCracken was rushed to a hospital and treated for intense chest pains, nausea and vomiting. He was later diagnosed with acute pancreatitis, a severe inflammation of the pancreas caused by autodigestion of pancreatic tissue by its own enzymes. The condition most often stems from alcohol abuse or gallstones, according to the University of Maryland Endocrinology Health… Read more »
