Latin Grammy Loss Hurts Miami's Pride, Pocketbook

Hoteliers, restaurateurs and tourism promoters mourned the loss of the $40 million bonanza that the now-decamped Latin Grammy awards show was expected to bring to the Miami area. But what really has them crying in their Cristal Roederer is the blow to the city’s image. The Latin Grammy organizers said Monday that they were moving the glitzy Sept. 11 award show to Los Angeles because of worries that protests against artists from communist Cuba could threaten the safety of performers and spectators. “The perception of Miami in the international community is greatly damaged by this,” said Leslie Zigel, vice president… Read more »

Music Sales Down 10 Percent This Year

Music buyers kept a tighter hold on their purse strings in the first half of 2001, but for those who did hit the stores, full-length CDs accounted for even more purchases than they did last year, according to data released Monday by the Recording Industry Assn. of America. Unit shipments of music in all formats tumbled nearly 10% in the first six months of the year compared with the same period a year ago, while their dollar value slipped by 4.4% to $5.9 billion, the RIAA said. Accounting for part of that discrepancy was the relative strength of the industry’s… Read more »

Production maestros the Neptunes didn’t find what they were looking for when they first tracked their debut album as N*E*R*D, In Search Of… The duo have scrapped the effort and re-recorded its songs with live instrumentation instead of programming. The album, which was originally due in July, has not been rescheduled, though Neptune Pharrell Williams recently said it would come out in the fall. The revised LP will feature all of the same songs and retain the same title, a Virgin Records spokesperson said. There was no word on whether a new version of the single, “Lap Dance,” will be… Read more »

Korean Song-Swap Creators Indicted

Internet song-sharing software is downloaded and enjoyed by millions of music fans and becomes the talk of the nation. Record labels complain and seek to punish the program’s creators for allegedly encouraging music piracy. So it goes for Soribada, or “Sea of Sound,” South Korea’s answer to Napster. Except instead of facing a lawsuit, the two U.S.-educated brothers who authored the file-swapping program are in deeper trouble. Yang Jung-hwan, 28, and his 32-year-old brother Yang Il-hwan were indicted Sunday on criminal charges of copyright violation. The Yang brothers, who face up to five years in jail and up to $38,500… Read more »

At The Vans Warped Tour, Punk, Served More Often Sweet Than Raw

Punk as an aid for getting in touch with one’s feelings has superseded the other modes evident at this year’s Warped Tour. As in their ordinary lives, these fans had too many options. Thirty bands played on eight stages, and the event also included professional skateboarding and mountain- biking displays, a wrestling ring, a Playstation tent, numerous ways to spend money or learn about political causes and of course the chance to peruse one another’s concertgoing finery. So most fans locked into a perambulatory pattern, meandering around the festival’s circular layout as the fairground grew dusty, then muddy, from the… Read more »

German electronic music guru Paul Van Dyk is set to follow up the success of 2000’s Out There and Back with his first-ever mix CD this fall. The artist, who has reluctantly become a figurehead for trance music, is in the process of putting together a two-disc set called Politics of Dancing (due October 23rd on Ministry of Sound), an album he says will maintain the kind of progressive spacey epic known as the “Paul Van Dyk sound.” “I never did a DJ mix because I didn’t think I could quite bring across the atmosphere of a club,” Van Dyk… Read more »
