'Lady Marmalade,' 'N Sync Top MTV Video Awards

The video for the hit “Lady Marmalade” won best video of the year at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday in a ceremony largely devoid of the sort of unscripted disruptions that have marked the show in the past and which included a surprise appearance by Michael Jackson. “Marmalade,” featuring pop and hip-hop divas Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya, Pink and Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott, won the top honor at the 18th annual awards given out by cable’s Music Television, beating out U2, Eminem and Janet Jackson among others. The video also won best video from a film, from… Read more »

Fatboy Slim Dominate MTV Video Awards

Fatboy Slim’s “Weapon of Choice” shot up the competition by bringing home six “Moon Man” trophies – including breakthrough video and best direction – Thursday night during the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center. But “Weapon of Choice,” directed by Spike Jonze and featuring Christopher Walken dancing up a hotel’s walls, was shut out of the prestigious video of the year prize, which went to Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya and Pink for “Lady Marmalade.” Last year’s big winners ‘N Sync walked away with four trophies for “Pop,” including the coveted Viewer’s Choice… Read more »

Alicia Keys, Jamie Foxx Strut Their Stuff At VMA Rehearsals

It’s two days until ground zero, when artists, a few lucky fans and music biz bigwigs will descend on the Metropolitan Opera House in New York for the 18th annual MTV Video Music Awards. While the night of the show is traditionally characterized by glitz and glamour, the feeling in the air Tuesday, the first day of rehearsals, more closely resembled the frenzied first day of a high school stage production than the controlled chaos the VMAs have come to represent. The sweeping stage flaunted its massive video screen and raised circular podium, though all its other accoutrements remained under… Read more »

Jackson's Return To Limelight Gets Mixed Reviews

Michael Jackson’s long-awaited return to the airwaves with the release of a new song from his album “Invincible” has not been as “thrilling” as expected, according to station programmers. The pop star, whose 1982 album “Thriller” ranks among the best-selling albums in the United States, officially returned to the airwaves last Friday after a long hiatus, as Epic Records released the first single off his comeback album to radio stations. Epic said it released the upbeat dance tune, “You Rock My World,” a few days earlier than planned after it was “leaked” by a pair of New York City stations… Read more »
