Bono Named 'European of the Year'

Bono, lead singer of the Irish rock band U2, has been named “European of the Year” for his campaign for debt relief in developing nations, in a poll conducted by the weekly European Voice. Danish film director Lars von Trier was named “Visionary of the Year.” Ten winners were selected by European Voice readers from a list of 50 nominees compiled by journalists and opinion leaders from across the 15 European Union nations. The announcement was made earlier this month. Each winner received $4,458 to donate to a charity of his or her choice. Bono, 41, said his prize would… Read more »

Guns N' Roses Cancel European Tour – Again

Guns N’ Roses have again canceled their tour of Europe, but unlike other artists rethinking their overseas trips, Axl Rose doesn’t seem to be afraid of traveling – he’s afraid of not being able to work on the band’s never-ending new album. Earlier this year GN’R canceled a 14-city European jaunt scheduled for June, citing an unspecified stomach ailment suffered by guitarist Buckethead, and then rebooked the dates for December. But on Thursday (November 8), the band’s European agent issued a statement in which GN’R manager Doug Goldstein appears to take personal blame for the tour’s demise. “Following the euphoria… Read more »

Blink-182 Postpones European Tour

Blink-182 has postponed its fall European tour in support of its latest album, Take Off Your Pants And Jacket, becoming the latest American group to make such a move in recent weeks in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Blink has rescheduled the trek for just after the first of the year, beginning in Zurich, Germany on January 4. Fourteen shows are scheduled, including a two-night stand at London’s Wembley Arena. Others to cancel overseas tours since the tragedies on the East Coast include Weezer, Janet Jackson, Pantera, and Aimee Mann.

Weezer Cancels European Tour, To Play U.S. Dates Through December

Last month’s terrorist attacks have played a hand in thwarting yet another tour, this time claiming Weezer’s planned 16-date European trek that was to begin in Copenhagen on October 9. However, a post on the group’s official website (weezer.com) suggests that other, unnamed factors played as substantial a role in the decision. “While the recent tragic events have indeed played a part in the fate of this tour by making world travel and airfreight more expensive, difficult, and (as many have warned) more risky, it is not those events that have led to this decision,” the note says. “A whole… Read more »

Guns N' Roses Cancel European Tour

Guns N’ Roses have canceled their entire European tour, which was to kick off June 1 at the Rock Im Park festival in Nurnberg, Germany. Guitarist Buckethead has suffered hemorrhaging and has missed rehearsals, according to Helter Skelter, the band’s European management agency. Doctors have been unable to determine the hemorrhaging’s cause, though the guitarist is going through extensive testing in California. With the deadline looming to ship the band’s equipment overseas, and given the rehearsal time required for a band that’s only performed together twice, the situation was deemed unworkable, according to a source close to the band. The… Read more »
