Will Smith Preps Next LP, New Tracks For 'MIB2'

Walking away empty-handed from the Academy Awards might faze some people. Will Smith is not some people. The former Fresh Prince is already onto his next project and taking it back to where it all began: the recording studio. Smith’s next album, which is still untitled, will hit stores on June 25. Hot on the heels of that release, Big Willie will reprise his role as Agent J in this summer’s “Men in Black 2,” the sequel to the 1997 blockbuster. Two songs from Smith’s forthcoming LP will be featured in the movie. One, “Nod Ya Head,” will also be… Read more »

New Eminem Album Shows Aerosmith, Zeppelin & Hendrix Influences

Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and Eminem? The multiplatinum rapper who loves nothing better than shocking the planet is claiming that his upcoming third album, The Eminem Show, was influenced by the classic rock he listened to while growing up. In an interview in the British magazine The Face, Eminem cites Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and Jimi Hendrix as reference points for his new tracks: “I don’t know if I succeeded or not, but I was trying to capture like a ’70s rock vibe for most of it. We treated this record like it was a rock record in so far as how it’s… Read more »

Chili Peppers Want To Spank You, In A Good Way

There aren’t any clever sex references in the title of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ follow-up to Californication, but that doesn’t mean the music is without a kinky quotient. “It’s going to spank your ass… in a good way,” singer Anthony Kiedis said Saturday at the ESPN Action Sports and Music Awards, where the band was given the Artist Contribution Award. By the Way, as the album will be called, was originally due in June, but the Chili Peppers have spent more time in the studio than expected and are now eyeing an August release date. “We could be [done],… Read more »

Neptunes Withhold The Bling From Clipse's 'Grindin' '

With its drums of vehemence and old-school claps, there is no “bling” in the Neptunes’ sound on their latest beat offering, the Clipse’s “Grindin.’ ” “We just wanted to strip it down,” Chad Hugo said last month of the beat he and his Neptunes partner Pharrell Williams created. “Just a break[beat] and a rapper. That’s how hip-hop was born. We just wanted to bring that element back to the music scene.” Signed to the Tunes’ new label venture with Arista, Star Trak Entertainment, the Clipse, composed of brothers Malice and Pusha T, have been grinding on the music scene for… Read more »

Perry Hits Lollapasnooza Button: Tour Sleeps Another Year

Music fans eagerly anticipating the return of the pioneering Lollapalooza tour will have to wait at least another year. After declaring in November that the mobile festival would end its four-year hiatus in 2002, organizers have delayed its return until next summer. “Having gotten a late start, we felt it would be smart to start building now for summer 2003,” Lollapalooza co-founder Perry Farrell said in a statement. “It will afford us a chance to get the headliner we really want.” The right lineup has always been important to Lollapalooza, which was planning to come back this year in part… Read more »

Now that their onstage cred is firmly established, Sevendust are looking to branch out beyond performance-based videos. The group shot two conceptual videos late last month in Toronto with director Noble Jones, who has previously worked with Roland Gift and Default. The first was for “Live Again,” the next single from the band’s latest album, Animosity. The clip concerns a girl who gets thrown out of her house by her father, who pushes her out the front door as her mother and neighbors stand by watching. “I’ve always been fascinated and disturbed by young people and children that get thrown… Read more »

Rob Zombie To Replace Rage Project On Ozzfest Main Stage

It seems Ozzfest, like any good corporation, promotes from within. Former second-stage headliner Rob Zombie will fill the main-stage slot vacated by the untitled Chris Cornell-Rage Against the Machine collaboration, which forfeited the slot after the ex-Soundgarden singer announced he was “no longer moving forward” with the project, according to tour organizers. Although appearing on the larger stage, Zombie will still perform the stripped-down set he planned for the second stage. The move now allows Down – a group composed of Pantera’s Philip Anselmo and members of Eyehategod, Corrosion of Conformity and Crowbar – to headline the second stage, while… Read more »

Hyperactive headbanger Andrew W.K. has been invited by Ozzfest organizers to fill the slot vacated by the unnamed group featuring Chris Cornell and members of Rage Against the Machine. An offer was extended to the party proponent a few days ago, and although he has yet to RSVP while his camp works out the logistics of the trek, Andrew W.K. is enthusiastic about the possibility, his manager said. The Rage-Cornell project was forced to resign its main-stage position on Ozzfest ’02 four days after organizers announced the band’s inclusion on the bill, following Cornell’s announcement that he was “no longer… Read more »
