Earlier today, The Script announced that their guitarist Mark Sheehan passed away at the age of 46. The post read, “Much loved husband, father, brother, band mate and friend Mark Sheehan passed away today in hospital after a brief illness. The family and group ask fans to respect their privacy at this tragic time.” Sheeran was a co-founder of the band, along with his best friends Danny O’Donoghue and drummer Glen Power. Martin Scorsese’s long-awaited film “The Irishman” finally arrives in select theaters and on Netflix this fall. Inspired by the book “I heard you paint houses” by Charles Brandt, the movie dives into the confession of, the hitman and one-time labor union official, Frank Sheeran who claimed to have played a part in the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. To paint a house is a polite euphemism for the work done by a hitman, a reference to blood spatter. Yahoo is dropping its subscription music service and replacing it with Rhapsody America, a competing service operated by RealNetworks and MTV Networks. As part of the deal, Yahoo will exclusively promote Rhapsody on its site and integrate the service into Yahoo Music. The two plan to collaborate on other digital music services such as music downloads. It’s part of a broad strategic partnership announced Monday by the two companies. Yahoo and RealNetworks said the process of transferring subscriptions from Yahoo Music Unlimited to Rhapsody will start midyear and will be painless. In a rare open letter from CEO Steve Jobs on Tuesday, Apple urged record companies to abandon digital rights management technologies. The letter, posted on Apple’s Web site and titled “Thoughts on Music,” is a long examination of Apple’s iTunes and what the future may hold for the online distribution of copy-protected music. In the letter, Jobs says Apple was forced to create a DRM system to get the world’s four largest record companies on board with the iTunes Store. But there are alternatives, Jobs wrote. The competition for online music customers is heating up. RealNetworks launched RealOne Rhapsody on Friday and simultaneously dropped the price of burning from 99 cents to 79 cents per track. Subscribers to the existing RealOne SuperPass entertainment service already have been receiving Rhapsody’s Internet radio product. These 900,000 customers will gradually be migrated over to the complete replacement service, which includes the customizable professionally programmed and custom radio stations along with on-demand streaming, extensive music information and editorial comment, features and recommendations.
