Whitney Houston's 'The Star-Spangled Banner' Suit Dropped

The suit filed against Arista Records for royalties from the re-release of Whitney Houston’s “The Star-Spangled Banner” was dropped Monday (December 17), according to a spokesperson for Arista Records. “It was the shortest lawsuit in history,” the spokesperson said. “It was an administrative oversight from [Houston’s] Greatest Hits album.” Leonard David Stone, executive director for the orchestra, said until a resolution has been reached, he was prohibited from commenting on the matter. The Florida Orchestra, which recorded the national anthem with Houston in 1991, filed a suit Friday (December 14), asking a judge to ensure that Arista honored an agreement… Read more »

'Drinks on Me' Offer Results in $59,000 Bill

Hundreds of revelers at a London nightclub were delighted when a businessman offered to pay for drinks all round – and ended up with a bill for more than 42,000 pounds ($59,000). The 39-year-old German-born fruit importer, who chose to remain anonymous, strolled into Brown’s nightclub in Covent Garden, central London, on Saturday night and insisted on buying birthday drinks for the club’s owner, Richard Traviss. “I asked for a glass of champagne and he presented me with nine bottles,” Traviss was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail newspaper on Wednesday. “I thought to myself, ‘Who is this guy?”‘… Read more »

*NSYNC will not be performing at the all-star salute to Michael Jackson due to scheduling conflicts, according to the event’s producer David Gest. The pop group was originally scheduled to perform with Jackson on September 7, but Gest released a statement today (August 22) in which he explained: “Michael Jackson and *NSYNC will not have time to rehearse the ‘Dancing Machine’ number with the Jacksons in the way Michael planned to present it. Continental Drifters Are Overlooked

Rock-band theme songs went out with the Monkees, but you wouldn’t know that when Susan Cowsill of the Continental Drifters steps to the microphone for “Someday.” It sounds like she’s singing about the very reasons for her band and its work. “I’m gonna pay my bills and stand where I stand,” she sings, “and maybe even start a little rock ‘n’ roll band. And maybe my friends will give me a hand. And if that doesn’t take away my sorrow, I’m gonna get up again and do it tomorrow.” Eyes closed, she holds the last note – bathed in the… Read more »

Ozzfest Ranks As A Top Concert Draw

When the wife of heavy metal god Ozzy Osbourne came up with the idea of a tour featuring the heavy hitters of metal and hard rock, the reaction from the concert industry was lukewarm, at best. “In my gut feeling, I felt that it would definitely work, because there was a huge void in the marketplace for it,” Sharon Osbourne recalled. “Not a lot of people in the market agreed with me at the time.” Certainly, no one can disagree with her now. Ozzfest, now in its sixth year, has consistently ranked as one of the top concert draws of… Read more »

Bad Religion Drummer Forced Into Retirement

Southern California punk stalwarts Bad Religion were forced to cancel their European tour due to drummer Bobby Schayer’s shoulder injury. Moreover, the damaged rotator cuff will take him out of the band’s lineup permanently. The injury prohibits Schayer from lifting his arm above his shoulder, effectively ending his drumming career, according to the band’s publicist. Suicidal Tendencies drummer Brooks Wackerman is slated to replace the fallen percussionist. Schayer’s injury has “left us stunned and greatly saddened,” the bandmembers posted on their official Web site (www.badreligion.com). “His doctor tells us that he has lost a very significant amount of motion in… Read more »
