Alien Ant Farm Singer Likely To Need Surgery For Back Injury

Alien Ant Farm frontman Dryden Mitchell remains overseas recovering from serious back injuries suffered in a bus accident in Spain last week. The impact fractured his C2 vertebra, which is likely to require surgery, according to a DreamWorks Records spokesperson. Mitchell was transported to a London hospital Friday, where he was put in traction and outfitted with a metal halo that restricts movement in his upper body. There’s no word on when he may return home. “I’m just so grateful that my injuries aren’t worse,” Mitchell said in a statement. “There will be a lot of rehabilitation and physical therapy,… Read more »

311 to get the Teargas & Plateglass treatment

311 are about to get the remix treatment from underground / hip hop production team Teargas and Plateglass. Teargas & Plateglass will add their signature dark ambient dub vibe to the track “Amber” and according to the duo, “take it very very down”. Alternative rock act 311 formed in 1990 and by 1995 had sold 3 million copies of their “Blue” album. “Amber” is from their new album “From Chaos”. Teargas and Plateglass are known for their series of remixes for a bizarre and disjointed list of artists who commissioned their services for a sound falling somewhere between the dope… Read more »

Guy Trades Britney Tix for Cash

A 13-year-old boy decided he’d rather have $475 in cash than see teen pop queen Britney Spears in concert. After twisting off the cap from a bottle of Pepsi, Andrew Benson discovered he had won four tickets to a Spears concert and $200 in spending money. His musical taste runs more to rap artists so the choice wasn’t too difficult. Andrew called the toll-free number on the cap and traded in the prizes for $475, which he plans to share with his nine brothers and sisters and four cousins. His mother said she will pitch in another $25, so he… Read more »

Britney Avoids Vice, Justin Talk, Anything New At Sin City Tour Opener – Review

In the city of sin, Britney Spears behaved. There was no dissing of Justin Timberlake during the opening night of the second leg of the Dream Within a Dream Tour. No cigarette smoking. No… whatever vice the rumor mills have her doing this week. Things may have changed in Britney’s well-chronicled life since the last time we saw her onstage – and that’s only if you believe the gossip – but there were no signs of it Friday at Mandalay Bay. The 20-year-old headliner was the same pop princess she was at 19. Nearly every part of Spears’ 90-minute show… Read more »

Fred Durst Taking Guitar Matters Into His Own Hands?

Limp Bizkit jammed with four finalists after their much-publicized guitarist audition tour, but now it looks like Fred Durst might be taking a cue from his Puddle of Mudd pal Wes Scantlin and handling both vocal and guitar duties himself. “I’ve been doing a lot of writing lately, all kinds of styles,” he posted on the band’s Web site. “I’m playing guitar, too, [and] I have a couple PRS custom guitars being made for me.” Durst added that Limp Bizkit have rented a “cheesy ’70s house in the flats” that they’ve soundproofed so they don’t bother the neighbors. “It’s pink… Read more »

Music Industry Seeks Federal 'Payola' Inquiry

The recording industry from artists to major labels joined on Thursday in a rare show of unity to demand tougher laws barring what they called “payola”-like promotion of music played on the radio. They also called for a sweeping government review of radio industry consolidation. Deregulation of the radio business and rampant practices that skirt 40-year-old anti-payola laws stifle competition, drive up music promotional costs and make it harder for new artists to gain attention, the artists and record labels said in a joint statement addressed to the federal regulators and Congress. The statement was endorsed by a broad coalition… Read more »

Alien Ant Farm have canceled all remaining May and June performances due to injuries the band sustained in a bus accident Wednesday on tour in Spain. In addition to the WHFStival, a radio-sponsored festival scheduled for Sunday in Washington, D.C., the band has withdrawn from festivals in Indianapolis, Dallas, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Atlanta and Norfolk, Virginia, as well as dates with the Color Red, according to a DreamWorks Records spokesperson. Alien Ant Farm are still expected to participate in this year’s Rolling Rock Town Fair, slated for July 27 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Early Wednesday morning, AAF’s tour bus crashed into… Read more »

White Stripes Deliver Dirty-Kneed Blues Rock At Hometown Show – Review

A sold-out suburban Detroit crowd showed its love for the red and white Wednesday at the Royal Oak Music Theatre by overzealously welcoming home the rock duo White Stripes. Fans punched their fists in the air and screamed heartily as singer/guitarist Jack White began the show in true rock star fashion – by dropping to his knees for an introductory blistering guitar solo from “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground,” the opening track from the White Stripes’ breakthrough album, White Blood Cells. “Good evening, children,” Jack said to the crowd. “My name is Jack White and this is my big… Read more »

Detroit Electronic Music Fest Expands

The Detroit Electronic Music Festival drew more than 1 million people in each of its first two years. This year, organizers are emphasizing a wider variety of performers – and wondering why techno, which is hugely popular in Europe, is less well-received in the United States. The lineup of nearly 70 performers represents a blend of urban music, and includes Parliament Funkadelic’s George Clinton and the Los Angeles-based hip-hop trio Dilated Peoples. The three-day festival starts Saturday. “What we’re seeing now is a combination between hip-hop music and electronic music, and I think the Detroit festival is capitalizing on that,”… Read more »

Sonic Youth Dig Through Vaults

In addition to the release of their new album, Murray Street, next month, Sonic Youth have begun work on a trio of reissues, the first of which, Dirty, is scheduled for release this summer. The band has been pouring through unreleased demos and songs for the series, which will see Dirty, Daydream Nation and Goo remastered and reissued with new liner notes and a bonus CD of new material. “It’s pretty much together,” singer-guitarist Thurston Moore says of the new Dirty. “We weren’t too interested in putting live stuff on there; it would take forever to go through it. But… Read more »
