Goodie Mob Member Injured in Crash

Willie “Khujo” Knighton of the Atlanta-based rap group Goodie Mob was in stable condition but had to have part of his leg amputated after a car wreck. Knighton fell asleep while driving from a recording studio early Tuesday on Interstate 75 and crashed, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported in Thursday’s editions. Cee-Lo Green, another Goodie Mob member, said doctors amputated part of the 30-year-old Knighton’s right leg from the shin down. “Khujo is still in very good strong spirits,” he told the newspaper. Plans were underway to help pay for a medical grafting procedure in Los Angeles for Knighton. Antwan “Big… Read more »

Will Lower Royalty Rates Save Online Radio?

The government seemed to side with Internet broadcasters when establishing a royalty rate Thursday, and although the new fees were lower than a proposal rejected last month, the costs may force several independent Net radio stations out of business. The U.S. Copyright Office settled on a rate of 0.07 cent per listener per song for both Internet-only stations and conventional stations that simulcast their programming on the Web, according to a government spokesperson. The rate is exactly half of what the Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel (CARP), a three-member board appointed by the Copyright Office, suggested in February that Internet-only stations… Read more »

Web radio royalty rate for songs criticized

In a decision criticized by both Webcasters and the recording industry, a government official Thursday ruled that Internet radio stations must pay royalty rates that are 50 percent less than proposed by a federal panel. Librarian of Congress James H. Billington has ruled that all Webcasters will have to pay 0.07 cents per song per performance, compared with the 0.14 cents per song per performance recommended by a federal arbitration panel in February. But Billington stunned Webcasters by flatly rejecting their call for royalty rates that are based on a percentage of revenues. While the recording industry said Billington’s decision… Read more »

Dave Grohl Says Nirvana Legal Battle Not Worth The Anguish

The Courtney Love vs. Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic case is on its way to court, and in late September the world should know more about the fate of unreleased Nirvana material. But Grohl is beginning to question whether all the legal mumbo jumbo is worth the hassle. In April the surviving members of Nirvana asked that Love be forced to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to test her sanity, and later in the month a judge denied the request, causing Grohl to bang his head against the wall as forcefully as he pummels his drum kit. “At the end of… Read more »

SR-71 Spy A Better Day 'Tomorrow'

In an attempt to explain the evolution from SR-71’s major-label debut to their upcoming release, singer Mitch Allan suggested a similarity to the progression from the Beatles’ Revolver to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Then he caught himself. “Not to compare our albums to those albums,” Allan said. “Maybe it’s more like the difference between Sugar Ray’s first and second albums.” It may not be Sgt. Pepper’s, but Allan couldn’t be happier about SR-71’s Tomorrow, which abandons the pop-punk focus of 2000’s Now You See the Inside for a more anthem-rock approach. “When people hear the first single they’re… Read more »
