Sharon Osbourne Gets TV Deal

Sharon Osbourne may regret her hit MTV series, but she’s still fond of television, and reportedly has signed up as host of a syndicated talk show. The wife of rock star Ozzy Osbourne has reached a deal with Telepictures Productions for the show beginning in fall 2003, Electronic Media online reported Thursday. A spokesman for Telepictures said the company doesn’t comment on projects in development. Terms of the deal were unavailable, Electronic Media said. In an interview with ABC’s Barbara Walters that aired this week, Osbourne said she wouldn’t invite MTV’s cameras into her home for reality series “The Osbournes”… Read more »

No more music CDs without copy protection, claims BMG unit

Faced with adverse publicity to copy protection on CDs, a year ago Bertelsmann Music Group bravely gave in and promised to replace a clutch of Natalie Imbruglia CDs which were protected by Midbar’s Cactus Data Shield. But a year is a long time, BMG is at it again, this time apparently set on applying copy protection to all its music products. Not, of course, that this should be surprising. The music companies are absolutely intent on copy-proofing their products, and although they’ll maybe retreat a little when irate consumers pelt them with ordure, they’ll be right back just as soon… Read more »

Sharon Osbourne Rethinks MTV Show

If she had to do it over again, Sharon Osbourne says she wouldn’t have invited MTV’s cameras into her home. At least, that’s what the cancer-stricken matriarch of television’s favorite dysfunctional family told ABC’s Barbara Walters when she talked to her earlier this fall. Osbourne said, in an interview to air on a special “20/20” edition Wednesday, that she’s calling it quits after an upcoming, 10-episode season is through. “We can’t do it anymore,” she said. When ABC released those quotes on Monday, an obviously concerned MTV President Van Toffler called Osbourne. He said she told him: “You know you… Read more »

Osbournes to Host Music Awards Show

The censors may have to stay on their toes when Ozzy Osbourne and his family host the 30th annual American Music Awards. The three-hour special is scheduled to air live on ABC, starting at 8 p.m. EST Jan. 13. “I can’t wait to see what Ozzy and the rest of the family have in store for us, and I know the ABC-TV censor is already having dreams, or should I say nightmares, about their live ad-libs,” executive producer Dick Clark said Monday. The heavy-metal icon, his wife, Sharon, and two of their three children are notorious for their profanity-laced misadventures… Read more »

Rapper Eminem Wrestled With Role

Rapper Eminem says he worked up to 16 hours a day to get details right in “8 Mile,” a movie based loosely on his troubled youth. “I’m like, yo, watch my facial expression here, it’s not the greatest in the world,” Eminem said in Sunday’s edition of The New York Times Magazine. “Every time I felt like I wasn’t believable, I took notes and I brought them to Curtis (Hanson, the film’s director).” The 30-year-old rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, said he worked six days a week, 13 to 16 hours a day, on the set of the… Read more »

Rapper Eminem Gets More Respect

Until recently, it seemed only kids – and music critics – could love Eminem. Politicians condemned his obscenity-laced and violent lyrics. Gay and women’s groups blasted him as a homophobe and misogynist. The Grammy-winning Detroit rapper had millions in album sales, but little love from mainstream America. Well, he’s still not America’s sweetheart. But some of the vitriol directed at Eminem has diminished – replaced not just by grudging respect, but by downright enthusiasm from some unlikely quarters. “The guy is funny, smart, and sometimes shocking,” author Stephen King gushed on his Web site. “Those are all things I look… Read more »

Jam Master Jay an Unlikely Target

As one of the forefathers of rap, with a history of social activism, Run-DMC’s Jam Master Jay was an unlikely target for the kind of violence that killed rappers Tupac Shakur or the Notorious B.I.G. Yet authorities were searching Thursday for the gunman who killed the 37-year-old disc jockey with a gunshot to the head inside his recording studio. “Jam Master Jay was a longtime family man and one of the founders of the group that knocked down all the doors for hip-hop,… Read more »

One Judge Quits 'American Idol'

Rapper/disc jockey Angie Martinez discovered she wasn’t tough enough to be an “American Idol” judge. Martinez, who was to join original judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul (news) and Randy Jackson for the Fox talent-search show’s second season, quit after the first few auditions. It became “too uncomfortable for me to tell someone else to give up on their dream, especially when I realized that many of them have supported my musical career,” Martinez said in a statement. Fox will stick with a trio of judges and not fill Martinez’s slot, a spokeswoman said Wednesday. The first edition of “American Idol,”… Read more »
