U2's Bono Launches Clothing Company

New York – Bono is now another type of frontman: U2’s lead singer – and most recognizable face – is charged with raising awareness and interest in the new fashion brand Edun. The casual collection of jeans, T-shirts, chiffon dresses and shrunken blazers is Bono’s brainchild. He’s out there promoting it (most recently at a launch party at Manhattan’s flagship Saks Fifth Avenue) and he’s wearing it, showing off his Edun jeans paired with his signature wraparound sunglasses. “I’m here to try to get the sound on the radio, if you know what I mean,” Bono says. He joins scores… Read more »

'Apprentice' Viewing Party a Den of Sin

Derrik J. Lang – Bad Language was a bad apple in a bunch of good-looking apples at a Garden of Eden-themed “Apprentice” viewing party Thursday night, ably hosted by that music network that’s not MTV. Good and evil partygoers feasted on chicken skewers and crab cakes amid pillars infused with vines and forbidden fruit. An array of rejects from the past two seasons fought for attention among Fuse video jockeys, Michael Imperioli, a contortionist and a snake lady. Although Audrey “I wanted to scar my face because I was so beautiful!” Evans giggled with a gaggle of attendees, Stacie “I’m… Read more »

Lil' Kim Takes Stand at Perjury Trial

New York – Rap star Lil’ Kim testified at her federal perjury trial on Thursday, telling jurors she was bullied by prosecutors when she allegedly lied to a grand jury about a 2001 shootout. “I was a victim (of the shooting),” said Lil’ Kim, a former sidekick of the late Notorious B.I.G. “I couldn’t believe I was being badgered the way I was.” Wearing a lacy peach dress beneath a white blazer, the 4-foot-11 Grammy winner frequently turned in the direction of jurors, flashed broad smiles and dropped names of famous artists she’s worked with. She was admonished by the… Read more »

Star of Heavy Metal's Motorhead Still Outspoken at 59

Los Angeles – Academia’s loss is heavy metal’s gain. Ian Kilmister, a.k.a. Lemmy, the frontman for Grammy-winning English rock trio Motorhead, could have made a stimulating history professor, sharing his begrudging admiration for Goering and disdain for “bastards” like Hitler and Roosevelt with eager students. Instead, the 59-year-old achieved cult fame with generations of headbangers by singing and writing furious anthems like “Killed By Death” and “Orgasmatron.” But he remains fascinated by World War II and he spends his money collecting Nazi memorabilia, which is piled high in his two-bedroom apartment off the Sunset Strip. “I was born in ’45,… Read more »

Aerosmith Gears Up for Tour, Live Album

New York – Aerosmith will reconvene in late August or early September to prepare for a tour that will begin in the fall, guitarist Joe Perry told Billboard. The group also has begun sifting through material for a prospective live CD/DVD. “We’re trying to find a show that has been recorded from beginning to end,” Perry said. “That’s something the fans have been requesting: a stone cold live record with a video.” “Some of the shows we’re looking at are from the last year, but who knows,” the guitarist continued. “We just heard about somebody who had a bunch of… Read more »

Matchbook Romance Say Out With The Old, Getting Around To The New

Ah, bullshit. You can smell it from a mile away. Even further when it comes from some of these new emotional hardcore bands, acts who supposedly rely on their own feelings for lyrical content but are really just pissing around with what’s “cool.” They don’t care at all and it’s horribly frustrating. Apparently Matchbook Romance drummer Aaron Stern shares these frustrations. “Too much music out there is insincere. It goes with the motions and that’s about it. I’m tired of hearing these bands capitalize on something that was supposed to have deepness to it, but at this point all I… Read more »

Music Rights Societies Giving Heirs Their Share

New York – Have you ever wondered who actually reads the obituaries page in your daily newspaper? One answer – a running joke in New York – is a renter who wants to find an apartment. But who else would tear out obits from The New York Times and take them to work? One regular obit reader is Gary Roth, assistant VP of legal and business affairs for performing rights at Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI) in New York. He is one of the society’s executives who deals with royalties payable to the heirs of deceased songwriters. Tracking heirs entitled to… Read more »

Motley Crue Kickstarts NYC's Heart

New York – There are several good reasons why Motley Crue didn’t play the halftime show at this year’s Super Bowl, and most of them were on display as the reunited ’80s rockers assaulted Madison Square Garden for the first time in 21 years. Having reigned as the Bad Boys of Rock ‘n’ Roll for most of the decade, the California quartet saw their decadence crown snatched away in the late ’80s by Axl Rose and Guns ‘N’ Roses. Motley’s own fortunes ebbed, the victim of substance abuse, supermodel divorces (drummer Tommy Lee managed to lose both Pamela Anderson and… Read more »
