What if you built a machine to predict hit movies?

One sunny afternoon not long ago, Dick Copaken sat in a booth at Daniel, one of those hushed, exclusive restaurants on Manhattan’s Upper East Side where the waiters glide spectrally fro table to table. He was wearing a starched button-down shirt and a blue blazer. Every strand of his thinning hair was in place, and he spoke calmly and slowly, his large pink Charlie Brow head bobbing along evenly as he did. Copaken spent many years as a partner at the white-shoe Washington, D.C., firm Covington & Burling, and he has a lawyer’s gravitas. One of his bes friends calls… Read more »

Musical Tastes Get High-Tech

OAKLAND, Calif. – Music retailers are turning to high-tech firms that combine computer analysis with the art of listening to come up with new music suggestions for consumers based on what they already like. In a computer-crammed space at Savage Beast Technologies, divergent melodies seep softly from headphones worn by young men and women who listen to music with the intensity of submarine sonar operators. Their job is to discern and define attributes in tunes by artists as diverse as teen diva Hilary Duff and jazz legend Miles Davis. The listeners classify hundreds of characteristics about each song, including beat,… Read more »

My Chemical Romance Lose Makeup, Don Fatigues For 'Ghost' Clip

In their previous videos, My Chemical Romance have worn boarding school uniforms and natty black suits. But in the upcoming clip for “The Ghost of You,” the Goth punkers are ditching all things refined and donning drab Army fatigues. While details on the video had been pretty scarce, frontman Gerard Way spilled some of the beans last week, and then continued to give up info when MTV News caught up with him at the KROQ Weenie Roast in Los Angeles. “The video is set in World War II, and it’s really about… loss and the fear of losing people, so… Read more »

Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba: 'Satanism's Fun'

Matt Skiba, lead singer and guitarist for Chicago punk purists Alkaline Trio, feels that there are a lot of misconceptions out there regarding Satanism, and, as a longtime member of Anton LaVey’s Church of Satan, can tell you that it’s not all fire, brimstone and threats of eternal damnation. Really, the faith’s simply about theatrics, how to comport yourself when you’re out and about (for instance, one of the church’s Ten Commandment-like mandates forbids followers from bothering others in open territory, but “if someone bothers you, ask him to stop – if he does not stop, destroy him”) and maintaining… Read more »

CRIA Suffer Another Legal Blow In Quest To Prosecute Alleged File Sharers

The Canadian Recording Industry Association suffered yet another blow Thursday in their perennial mission to deter online file sharing. Suspected to have made 43,541 songs available to the general public, the 29 individuals in question will have their identities remain a secret due to the court ruling.
