Sum 41 Work On New Album, Get Political

After tracking drum parts in Los Angeles, then shifting operations to their hometown of Toronto, Sum 41 have at least one more trip scheduled before they release the follow-up to 2002’s Does This Look Infected? And this one’s sure to give their frequent-flyer miles a boost. The pop-punk quartet will visit the Democratic Republic of the Congo in mid-May to film a documentary on the war-torn African country, according to an Island Def Jam spokesperson. “From the Front Lines,” produced by the Canadian charity organization War Child, will detail Sum 41’s two-week trip to the Congo, where they will examine… Read more »

Good Charlotte, Finger Eleven To Headline 2004 Edgefest

Well, last year we bid a sad and final farewell to Molson Park in Barrie, a favourite summer concert/festival venue in Ontario for the past 20 years and the host of many past Edgefests. The 2003 Edgefest made history by being the last event to ever be held at the Park. But with Molson Park sadly out of the picture, the state of Edgefest’ s existence was left up in the air. We weren’t sure if there was even going to be another Edgefest, let alone where the next one would be held. But Edgefest 2004 is a go and… Read more »

So what’s Justin Timberlake uncovering now? Timberlake, who ripped away part of Janet Jackson’s costume at the Super Bowl halftime show, tagged along with Associated Press reporter Bob Porterfield last week to get a taste for journalism. The Grammy-winning singer will play a reporter who uncovers an elite team of corrupt police in the upcoming film “Edison,” starring Kevin Spacey, Morgan Freeman and LL Cool J. Shooting is expected to begin in Canada in the coming weeks. Timberlake created a stir at the downtown county courthouse as he filled out an application for legal documents and pored over them with… Read more »

Default Will Adapt To Evanescence

Anyone remember the ‘80s metal band Queensryche? They were a pretty popular band at the time, but tell that to the angry fans who basically shot down and pissed on the band night after night when they opened for Metallica. Playing with a variety of big name bands can help a smaller band raise their profile. But if they can’t deliver to the fans’ interest, then it’s like sending the proverbial lamb to the slaughter. Default have had the unenviable task of catering to different types of audiences ever since they broke on to the scene, but bass player Dave… Read more »

Linkin Park Fan Goes Buck in Montreal

People respond to music in different ways. Some nod their head to the beat. Others like to tear it up in the pit. Then there are those who demonstrate their enthusiasm in their own special way. Linkin Park encountered one such fan at Montreal’s Bell Centre, where they recently played as part of their Meteora World Tour. Guitarist Brad Delson remembers it as if it were yesterday. “There was a 400-pound man who I guess had become so exhilarated with the show that he had taken off all of his clothes and he was dry-humping the floor,” he recalls. “It… Read more »

Story Of The Year Plan Gun Battle With Linkin Park

It must be a nasty surprise to come from the sunny warmth of Orange County, CA into the dead of Canadian winter. But that’s exactly what Story Of The Year did when they arrived in Canada onboard the Meteora World Tour in support of Linkin Park, P.O.D. and Hoobastank. But not only did the band brave the Canadian winter, they did it without the aid of heating. Upon crossing the border, the heating system on their tour bus failed, which made things interesting for their driver. “He had to drive with a blanket and two coats on, ’cause the heat… Read more »

Death From Above Get Down To Business

Their last recording had a budget of about $300. Still, Toronto duo Death From Above managed to use that small sum to create an aural masterpiece that led to worldwide attention and a tour across the Great White North with Billy Talent andAlexisonfire. It was probably the best three bills the band ever spent. And now they’ve got a solid grand – $1,000 – burning a hole in their pockets. You can just imagine how giddy bassistJesse F. Keeler and drummer/singer Sebastien Grainger must be as they gear up to record an 11-song full-length. “Considering what we spent with the… Read more »

The Marble Index Sign With Universal

About this time last year, an EP by a band called The Marble Index came into the Chart office. Now, usually we don’t put too much trust in bands that are completely unknown to us, but when we stuck the EP on our office stereo, every single Chart editor commented on how great it was. We all trucked out to Toronto’s Cameron House a few weeks later to see the band play and promptly declared them “the next big thing.” Now, we don’t want to say we told you so, but apparently the people at Universal Music Canada liked them… Read more »
