Labels' Online Music Services Nearly Ready, But Will People Pay?

MusicNet, Pressplay working out kinks in technology, licensing – now they need paying users. Although the major labels have been making strides in their efforts to deliver music to listeners’ desktops while collecting money for themselves and their artists, the road ahead is still littered with questions, and the labels’ long-promised services still are not a reality. When will music fans see them? When they do, will they be willing to pay for something they now can get for free? Can the industry shoot down all the new hotshot – and free – file-trading services? And whatever happened to Napster,… Read more »

Durst, Aguilera, Stefani Hope To Open People's Eyes With 'What's Going On' Videos

Christina Aguilera’s golden locks, Fred Durst’s backward ball cap, Gwen Stefani’s rainbow makeup and Justin Timberlake’s freshly grown peach fuzz took a back seat Thursday to a look unprecedented even in popular music – blindfolds. “I feel like I’m playing pin the tail on the donkey,” Aguilera quipped in between takes during the first day of shooting proper videos for three all-star remakes of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On.” Many of the artists who contributed to the project – from Ja Rule to Staind’s Aaron Lewis to Alicia Keys – will don blindfolds for the video shoot, which heads to… Read more »

Contrary to reports that are surfacing, the video clip for Incubus’s “I Wish You Were Here” has not been banned by MTV. The clip is currently at MTV and has been added for heavy rotation. A spokesperson for the band told LAUNCH that the video channel was presented with two versions of the clip. One had a scene emulating an episode from the ’60s TV show The Monkees in which the members of Incubus are chased by a pack of girls off a bridge and are forced to jump into the water below. Guitars Blare On Paul McCartney's Driving Rain

Although it probably won’t make Limp Bizkit, Staind or Linkin Park sound anemic by comparison, Paul McCartney’s Driving Rain should rock the house harder than anything the former Beatle has recorded since “Helter Skelter” – or at least “Helen Wheels.” “It’s a more aggressive record, definitely,” said producer David Kahne, who has worked with Sugar Ray, Sublime, the Bangles and Tony Bennett. “It’s got real energetic guitar songs. They’re all original, and there’s a lot of power there. I think he really loved doing that because he hadn’t done it in a while.” While Driving Rain’s guitar-blaring rockers will likely… Read more »

Disturbing Vibes Abound At The Crystal Method's Mayan Show – Review

It’s unfortunate when a single event or vibe during a show taints your experience enjoying the acts that are performing the music you respect and love. Last night’s (8/9) Mayan show in Los Angeles had all the makings of an incredible happening, especially for those in the SoCal dance community, and for many it probably was. Orange County’s Uberzone was opening for hometown boys The Crystal Method, whose latest album, Tweekend (Interscope), came out with impressive sales at Virgin Megastores the week before. New LA resident Detroit’s Static Revenger was spinning in between sets. Uberzone’s set proved to be a… Read more »

Eminem Turns Up On Jay-Z'S Blueprint

Roc-A-Fella Records CEO Damon Dash put just a little more of a pimp stroll than usual in his confident swagger as he walked into the penthouse of Manhattan’s Hotel Giraffe Thursday night. Dash was about to show a handful of invited guests his trump card – the new Jay-Z album, The Blueprint, which features appearances by Eminem and, apparently, Michael Jackson. “I don’t want to say we’re the backbone of hip-hop, because that may sound arrogant, but it is what it is,” Dash said before playing seven songs from the LP, which comes out September 18 and features the single… Read more »

'N Sync's "Celebrity'' Fleeting As "Now'' Bow Wows No. 1

The seemingly unsinkable ‘N Sync met their match in this week’s album rankings, as the teen phenoms ceded the top spot to the latest installment of blockbuster compilation series “Now That’s What I Call Music.” Sales of ‘N Sync’s “Celebrity” (Jive) dove 75% in their sophomore session to 460,000 units, blunting the giddy optimism generated the prior week when the record bowed with sales of nearly 2 million units. Filling the void on the music charts at No. 1 was “Now 7” (Virgin), the latest in a series that has had a virtual lock on multiplatinum status since its inception.… Read more »
