Entertainment companies that devote just 1% of their Web budgets to fund online word-of-mouth campaigns can boost a film’s box office by $15 million and double the sales of a book, according to a new study from Internet analyst firm Forrester Research, The numbers, from the report entitled “Bigger Hits With Net Marketing,” are some of the first to quantify the benefits of online advertising and they come at a time when one third of entertainment companies have decided that Internet marketing isn’t important. “Marketers understand that the Internet and word of mouth can help generate buzz, but they don’t… Read more »

Foo Fighters Open For Van Halen Wannabes

It is Friday night in the San Fernando Valley and the regulars at Paladino’s, a tiny biker bar, are out in full force. Hell’s Angels gun their engines in the parking lot while lines of leather-clad rock fossils straighten their acid-washed jeans, run combs through their mullets and get ready to rock. Most of the crowd has come to catch the Atomic Punks, a blue-ribbon Van Halen tribute band. But there’s another contingent on-hand. Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk, actor/singer Jack Black, and porn queen Jenna Jameson are in the house, and it’s unlikely they made the trek… Read more »

Radiohead: Meeting People Finally Is Easy

On their first U.S. jaunt in three years, Radiohead have overcome their fears of touring the States by coming to terms with their popularity and acclaim. With last year’s Kid A and the recently released Amnesiac debuting at #1 and #2, respectively, and selling more than a million copies combined, according to SoundScan… well, to quote the title of the film documenting the band’s grueling tour supporting their third album, 1997’s OK Computer, meeting people really is easy. “I really didn’t think I could deal with it at all,” frontman Thom Yorke said after the band’s performance at the Red… Read more »

Reconciled TLC Recording New Album, Solo Projects

Being a member of TLC means walking a fine line between love and… dislike. The trio’s bickering has been well-documented – enough so that many believed their most recent album, 1999’s Fan Mail, would be their last. The word that Chilli and Left Eye were working on solo albums, while T-Boz was raising a family with her hoo-bangin’ husband Mack 10, all but sealed the threesome’s demise for many. As Chilli tells it, though, while it may be hard for the crazy, sexy and cool trio to live with each other sometimes, it’s even tougher for them to live apart.… Read more »
