Hip-Hop Outlaw (Industry Version)

Late in the afternoon of Jan. 16, a SWAT team from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, backed up by officers from the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office and the local police department, along with a few drug-sniffing dogs, burst into a unmarked recording studio on a short, quiet street in an industrial neighborhood near the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The officers entered with their guns drawn; the local police chief said later that they were “prepared for the worst.” They had come to serve a warrant for the arrest of the studio’s owners on the grounds that they had violated the… Read more »

Butch Vig Says Garbage Hiatus Is Over; Jimmy Eat World Nearly Done With LP

Last we heard from Garbage, in the fall of 2005, the group was going on an indefinite hiatus. Fortunately for fans, that break is not turning out like, say, Blink-182’s “hiatus.” “We’re recording a couple new songs at the end of February,” drummer Butch Vig revealed recently. “I think everyone’s excited about getting back in a room and playing some music together.” The new tunes will be included on a Garbage greatest-hits album the band is putting together for release later in the year. “We’ve been working on it for a while,” Vig said. “There was originally talk about doing… Read more »

Indies Vs. Majors: Artists Face Tough Choices

Los Angeles – Before they made the jump to Atlantic Records in 2004, the members of Death Cab for Cutie thought long and hard about leaving Seattle’s Barsuk Records. But after six years of deliberation, and the ultimate satisfaction the band took in its decision, manager Jordan Kurland grants that there has been a twinge of remorse. “I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that after I saw Bright Eyes debut in the top 10, I didn’t think, ‘Ah, we should have done that…’ But we’re having a great time.” Indeed, the band Bright Eyes bolted to No. 10 on… Read more »

Phish Bassist Gordon Cleared

Phish’s Mike Gordon was cleared of child endangerment charges this morning, more than a month after the bassist was found alone with a nine-year-old girl in a boathouse during a concert by the Dead at Jones Beach Amphitheater in Wantagh, New York. “I am glad all the charges against me have been dismissed and I can put this misunderstanding behind me,” he said in a statement. “I am grateful for the support I’ve received from my friends and fans.” After the August 11th incident Gordon, 38, claimed that he was taking art pictures of the girl. Dashboard Confessional Singer Heals Scars, Stops Singing The Blues On New LP

Anyone who pegs Dashboard Confessional frontman Chris Carrabba as a sad pompadoured sack based on heartbreakers like “Again I Go Unnoticed” and “Screaming Infidelities” should get ready to change their perception of him. His new album, A Mark, a Mission, a Brand, a Scar, portrays the man tagged by many as a poster boy for emo in a mood that contradicts his conventionally accepted disposition. “I’m actually excited about the fact that it’s a happier record,” Carrabba said. “If it dispels those conceptions that I’m like, ultra mopey, that would be great because anybody who’s met me can tell you… Read more »

Jury Sets $136 Million Award in Piracy Case

In what the recording industry called the largest judgement ever in a U.S. copyright case, a federal jury in Los Angeles has fined a California CD maker more than $136 million for music piracy, officials said Friday. The jury handed down its multi-million dollar verdict against Media Group, a Fremont, California-based CD manufacturer, Wednesday, requiring it to pay $90,000 for each of more than 1,500 songs it copied illegally since 1995. Media Group declared bankruptcy last year after the judge in the case found the company and its then-chief executive, Jimmy Chan, guilty of “willful” violation of copyright laws. While… Read more »

Morissette Previews New Album At Los Angeles Show

Alanis Morissette has returned to the jagged little sound that made her famous. The Canadian singer debuted eight new songs during a show Friday night, providing a generous preview of her next album, which is sitting in limbo while she fights a contract dispute with Maverick Records. Much of the new material harked back to the edgier pop-rock of Morissette’s 1995 smash, Jagged Little Pill, and steered away from the moody, Eastern-influenced sound of its follow-up, 1998’s Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. Accordingly, the two-hour performance – the first of two consecutive nights at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre – was… Read more »
