U2 Wraps Up Latest North American Tour This Weekend

U2 wraps up the latest North American leg of its Elevation world tour this weekend, with shows Friday (November 30) in Atlanta, Saturday (December 1) in Tampa, and Sunday (December 2) in Miami, just down the road from Fort Lauderdale, where the tour opened on March 24. U2 guitarist the Edge said that the tour, supporting the Grammy-winning album All That You Can’t Leave Behind, has been exhausting at times but enjoyable throughout. “I’m having the best time, as we all are,” he says. “It’s been such a thrill to play this album live and to kind of just see… Read more »

Sid Caesar still going strong at 79

They came not to bury him, but to praise the man who pioneered television sketch comedy. Sid Caesar, whose “Your Show of Shows” was a household name during its run from 1950 to 1954, recalls being amazed and profoundly moved when he received a 15-minute standing ovation during his recent appearance on Drew Carey’s improvisational series “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” on ABC. The 79-year-old actor, who walks with a cane following recent surgery to both hips, told Reuters his biggest fear about returning to the small screen after an absence of more than 20 years was that no one… Read more »

Britney Goes Bald, Plays Tiny Dancer, Gets Caught In The Rain At Tour Kickoff

Almost a week late, Britney Spears finally kicked off her Britney 2001 Tour Thursday night after the flu and a kink in her pre-production held her up. Obviously the fans who flooded the Nationwide Arena expected the concert to be all about Britney – the person, that is. And sure, she explored some personal issues/interests, appearing with a bald head at one point, bungee jumping and fighting off faceless nemeses during her performance, but the singer kept true to her promise to make a large portion of the show about Britney, the album. She previewed several cuts off of her… Read more »

Themes of unity and perseverance permeated every performance, with artists often thanking the sold-out crowd for the message they were sending to the rest of the country – that no matter the… Read more »

TV Turns To Michelle Branch, P.O.D., Other Artists To Help Tell The Story

Nurse Abby Lockheart has just been dumped. She is in the middle of the rather painful process of moving her stuff out of her ex-boyfriend’s apartment. And to make matters worse, Cake’s “Short Skirt/Long Jacket,” a song about the things a man is looking for in a woman, is playing on the radio. On “ER,” popular music is becoming a bigger part of the story line with every episode. “It adds something to the show every time we use it,” “ER” supervising producer and writer Scott Gemmill said. “It’s amazing what music can bring to a scene.” There’s a new… Read more »

Chubby Checker: The Wheels Rock Rolls On?

When Chubby Checker was asked recently to guest on “Ally McBeal,” he thought he was being recognized for his contributions to popular music. His elation turned to frustration, however, when a character on the show read the line, “Gee, I thought Chubby Checker was dead.” “That was it for me,” Checker said Tuesday from Boston, where he was performing. “I wanted to make sure everyone knows I’m not dead.” Checker, who turned 60 on Wednesday, may have gone a little overboard. He certainly seems to have some, er, twisted ideas. He bought a full-page ad in Billboard magazine declaring himself… Read more »

XM Places $1 Billion Bet On Satellite Radio Launch

From a chair that looked as if it belongs on the starship Enterprise, Hugh Panero flipped a switch Tuesday and formally launched XM, the first of the nationwide satellite radio services to go on the air. While the ceremony marked XM’s official start, it will not be a national service for some months because the signal is being beamed from the company’s two satellites – “Rock” and “Roll” – to San Diego and Dallas. The company plans to roll out service to the southern half of the United States within a month and to the rest of the nation in… Read more »

Judas Priest Singer Says No Connection To 'Rock Star'

In the new movie Rock Star, a young man fronting a cover band is tapped to join his heroes and replace their lead singer. The story should sound familiar, since it’s patterned after what happened to Tim “Ripper” Owens, the cover-band singer who replaced Rob Halford in Judas Priest. However, Owens told LAUNCH that while Rock Star might sound similar to his story, the moviemakers chose to exclude him and his bandmates from the project. “There was a New York Times article on me, and they bought the rights to the story and they called us,” he said. “And from… Read more »
