The first commercial radio station to cybercast its over-the-air playlist is among the first to fall victim to newly imposed royalty rates for online broadcasts. KPIG stopped streaming music online Thursday, ending a near seven-year run on the Internet. According to its own estimates, the small-scale station would have been forced to pay $24,000 in back royalties (or approximately $3,000 per month) from this year alone on an arm of the station that generates little or no revenue on its own. As Mystikal’s lawyers declared his innocence on charges of rape and extortion on Friday (July 19), authorities revealed they confiscated a video of the alleged sexual assaults from the rapper’s Baton Rouge home. The tape, which has been placed into evidence, allegedly shows Mystikal and two other men, Leland Ellis and Vercy Carter, threatening the rapper’s 40-year-old hair stylist and forcing her to have sex with them, according to Cpl. A group of Seattle singers organizing a series of worldwide performances of Mozart’s “Requiem” for Sept. 11 say they have gotten thousands of e-mails in support of the idea. “The heartfelt nature of their responses is remarkable,” said Madeline Johnson, chairwoman of the Rolling Requiem Committee and a member of the Seattle Symphony Chorale. “It shows there is a worldwide longing to give voice to healing, to hope, to love.” Thirty choirs from around the world have signed up to take part in the “Rolling Requiem” and many more are considering joining, Johnson said. Concert grosses for the first half of the year were up 17 percent, but so were ticket prices – the average cost of a ticket for top tours was about $51, compared to $47 last year, according to an industry report.
