Indie music world tunes in to That '90s Show

With the economy headed for recession and a Clinton running for the White House, it feels like the ’90s all over again. A spate of recent musical happenings in the indie world is supplying an appropriate soundtrack: The Lemonheads just reissued their 1992 album “It’s a Shame About Ray” and played the entire album at New York’s Bowery Ballroom; the Breeders released a new record April 8; and Liz Phair just announced she’ll issue a deluxe edition of her provocative 1993 disc “Exile in Guyville.” As more ’90s acts return and sign to indie labels, a particular set of challenges… Read more »

The Democratization of the Music Industry

As I write this, iTunes ranks as the 2nd largest seller of music in the U.S. — only Wal-Mart’s physical stores sell more. Digital revenue is real, and there is a lot of it being earned. Sales from iTunes alone can provide a band enough revenue to achieve true financial success. Don’t take my word for it, just look at some of the sales by the following unsigned artists utilizing the Net for both digital distribution and marketing: Kelly sold over 500,000 songs in five months, Eric Hutchinson sold 120,000 songs in three weeks, The Medic Droid sold over 25,000… Read more »

Music Fans Prefer Wikipedia to MySpace

Search for an artist on any of the popular search engines, and the top three results are practically guaranteed: the artist’s official Web site, Wikipedia entry and MySpace page — often in that order. But while artists and their handlers devote massive attention to the Web site and MySpace, the Wikipedia page is often overlooked. Recent data suggests they may want to reconsider their priorities. According to data provided to Billboard from Yahoo — the second-most popular search engine on the Web after Google — those searching for artist information are selecting the Wikipedia entry link over artists’ MySpace pages… Read more »

The Starting Line to Call it Quits… For Now

The following message was sent to Starting Line fans via email Wednesday evening: From all the east coast to west coast states I want to feel the warmth from the buzz that I create But I’m really not too sure If it’s ever gonna happen But I know that I’m not too concerned Imagine getting your first job when you were 15 years old and doing that exact same job for the rest of your life. Even if it’s the dream job that most people would kill for, eventually you need to stop for a minute and see what else… Read more »

Linkin Park Rocks Mariner – Review

The dream of many kids learning to play guitar or prancing in front of a mirror with a faux microphone is to play in front of a sold out crowd singing along to their songs and chanting their name; Linkin Park has lived their dreams and then some. After a very successful Projekt Revolution tour this past summer, the band was back out on the road with an arena tour bringing Chiodos and Coheed & Cambria along for the ride. For the near sold-out crowd in Baltimore on February 19th, it was a rock show to remember. Probably one of… Read more »

Kanye West loves the Grammys. The rapper has never hidden his lust for awards or his pleasure in the shine of a ceremonial spotlight. The Grammys at 50 are showing their age

Troubled British singer Amy Winehouse is the perfect poster girl for the current state of the music industry. Music isn’t her problem. Everything else is. That’s exactly the same situation that the music industry – faced with lagging sales, a lack of star power and defection from its biggest moneymakers – finds itself in these days. And when the music industry has problems, the Grammys – celebrating their 50th anniversary Sunday – do as well. Winehouse and her stunning R&B revivalist debut “Back to Black” (Universal Republic) are up for six awards; she’s the only artist nominated in all four… Read more »

UB40's singer Ali Campbell quits after 30 years

Singer Ali Campbell is leaving the reggae band UB40 after selling tens of millions of records worldwide in a career spanning nearly 30 years, a spokesman for the group said on Friday. Campbell will quit after performing his last concerts with the band next month in Australia, New Zealand and Uganda.
