Go, Go Emo Rangers! Fight Back Tears – And Space Robots

Let’s face it: When it comes to defending the planet, five white-belted emo kids would probably be the last crew you’d want on the frontlines (even Captain Planet and those wussy Planeteers would instill more confidence). But in a new short film by two “unemployed” British directors, the fate of the free world rests directly on the scrawny shoulders of five sad sorta-superheroes. The film, called “Mighty Moshin’ Emo Rangers,” was the brainchild of Chris Phillips and Nick Pittom, two twentysomething filmmakers who were barely getting filming gigs for local bands. Their money situation only continued to worsen, and things… Read more »

'Idol' Judges Mostly Roast Singers

Los Angeles – Maybe Mario Vazquez suspected the “American Idol” judges would be in a foul mood this week. On Tuesday night’s show, Randy Jackson managed to be as dismissive as Simon Cowell, who remained true to form. And even Paula Abdul – yes, sweetie pie Paula – turned a bit sour. “That was very safe and boring,” she said of Carrie Underwood’s performance of “When Will I Be Loved,” inflicting serious wounds, or at least paper cuts. Jackson employed a scalpel. “That definitely sounded like I was in a bad hotel,” he said of Anthony Fedorov’s “Breaking Up is… Read more »

Coldplay Return To Stage, Debut Five Songs

UNIVERSAL CITY, California – Chris Martin only forgot the words once. After taking more than a year off from performing, Coldplay returned to the stage over the weekend, headlining influential public radio station KCRW-FM’s annual A Sounds Eclectic Evening concert on Saturday at the Universal Amphitheatre and warming up the night before at the Troubadour in West Hollywood. And while Martin stumbled through the opening of “Politik” during the encore of the KCRW show, the singer more than made up for it by treating fans to five new tracks from X&Y, due June 7, and six old favorites. “When you… Read more »

Despite just being in the beginning stages of her career, Brit trip-pop singer Jem has many a story to tell. It seems everybody in the business loves this girl – but why did it take so long for her to record an album? In November of ’99, Jemma Griffiths quit her job with a record label… Read more »

Backstreet Boy Littrell Preps for Christian Bow

Nashville – Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell will make his first foray into the Christian music market next fall when he releases his debut solo album. Littrell is talking to producers, but hasn’t nailed anyone down. He does have some songwriters in mind, though. “I would like to collaborate with Michael W. Smith,” he says. “We’ve been talking about that for years, and now we can start getting these things in motion. I’m looking for outside stuff, and I’ve got a lot of material in my head as well.” Littrell, who grew up attending a Baptist church with his family in… Read more »

Idlewild: A Best-Kept Secret No Longer

Wrap your head around this – you’re in a rock band that has been relatively ignored for about three years, despite having a couple of albums and a ton of singles under your belt. And then suddenly, out of the blue, people start hearing about you – but only because no one knows about you. Weird? Yeah. But that’s basically how things transpired for Scottish rockers Idlewild just a few years ago, flipping their world topsy-turvy in a sadistic twist of ironic fate. Idlewild: “I guess it started with SPIN Magazine naming 100 Broken Windows (the band’s 2000 release, it’s… Read more »

Yellowcard Just Want To Write Yellowcard Songs

Yellowcard aren’t like the other bands. They may have headlined this year’s Warped tour, but they’re pretty adamant about their individuality. They hate being lumped in with the Good Charlottes and the Simple Plans of the world and they don’t want to be labeled as pop-punk, emo or anything other than “Yellowcard.” “We hate being the ‘punk-pop heavyweights’ or whatever,” says band guitarist Benjamin Harper. (No, not that Ben Harper.) ChartAttack recently spoke with Ben regarding the band’s upcoming DVD, their place in the current scene and what it is that separates Yellowcard from their Warped Tour contemporaries. The band’s… Read more »

I can’t sleep. I haven’t slept in months because I want it to do well. I want it to do better than the last album. It’s my dream that people… Read more »

Suicide Band Banned From Club

A week after announcing plans to host an on-stage suicide by a terminally ill euthanasia advocate, Florida industrial rockers Hell on Earth have lost their booking at a Ft. Lauderdale venue. David Hundley, owner of the State Theater in St. Petersburg, said on Wednesday that he would not host next Saturday’s show. Unclear whether the planned suicide was a publicity stunt or an “illusion,” Hundley said during a press conference that his concern for what effect the stunt might have on young fans forced his hand. “We deal with a lot of kids here and we don’t want their parents… Read more »
