The Darkness Light Up British Rock Awards

British rock band The Darkness struck a blow for the big hair, skin-tight catsuits and wailing guitar solos of the 1980s Thursday, outshining rivals at Britain’s biggest heavy metal awards. The much-hyped quartet won two awards, for best album and best live act, at music magazine Kerrang!’s 10th annual ceremony in London. It was a far cry from the band’s humble roots in rural Suffolk, eastern England, where lead singer Justin Hawkins and the band used to perform before tiny audiences in bars. “We’ve always behaved like stadium rockers, even at the beginning when we were playing in pubs,” Hawkins… Read more »

Hanson, Radiohead Turned Off By Blackout, Tangiers Rescheduled

When there’s a major power outage like the one that occurred on Thursday (August 14) in Toronto, people are forced to go without a lot of amenities – there’s no air conditioning, no computer access, no television, no stove cooking, no refrigeration. And, if you’re a music fan, there’s no amplifiers, PA systems or electric guitars – in other words, no rock concerts. There were a number of concerts put on hold in New York and Detroit (including the much ballyhooed Stooges hometown reunion show) and there were also various postponements in Toronto. Most of the most high-profile casualties took… Read more »

The largest North American power blackout in history plunged more than 50 million people into darkness in a 9,600-square-mile swath from the East Coast to the Midwest and Southern Canada on Thursday, affecting everything from subways in New York to the water supply in Cleveland. The outage also cut the power to a number of summer tours, knocking Bob Dylan and Tori Amos offline and sending many other bands scurrying for backup plans and places to crash for the night. An eagerly awaited hometown reunion of punk pioneers the Stooges, scheduled to play their first Detroit show in more than… Read more »

Thrice Educate, Give Fans 'All That's Left' With Major-Label Debut

The backstage area of this year’s Vans Warped Tour often resembled a punk-rock frat party, according to Thrice frontman Dustin Kensrue. There was plenty of partying and more than a few juvenile practical jokes perpetrated by the bands and their crews. Such situations can be flat-out dangerous, and sometimes injuries ensue. A few weeks ago, Thrice drummer Riley Breckenridge damaged his back while reaching under the band’s bus. Was he looking for water balloons filled with sour milk to throw at the members of Pennywise? Nope. He was trying to remove his suitcase from the storage compartment, and in the… Read more »
