Zomba Records, the powerful independent record label that is home to the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears, said Thursday it had settled a copyright infringement lawsuit with online music company MP3.com Inc., a unit of Vivendi Universal. “The parties have settled the litigation between them and resolved their differences to their mutual satisfaction and have entered into a licensing arrangement for the My.mp3 service,” Zomba said in a statement. Embattled song-swap service Napster Inc. said Monday it was using new digital encoding technology to power a subscription-based service it hopes to launch this summer. Napster said the technology, licensed from PlayMedia Systems, would enable Napster’s software to encode, recognize and play copyright-protected music files on the membership service. “Napster is at the forefront of using some extremely advanced rights management and security technologies in a file-sharing environment,” Napster’s interim CEO Hank Barry said in a statement. Pamela Anderson has settled a lawsuit over another sex tape she made with an ’80s rocker, her lawyer said Wednesday. The porn company Internet Entertainment Group agreed to pay the actress and Bret Michaels, lead singer of the band Poison, a seven-figure sum and destroy all copies it acquired of a homemade sex video featuring the couple. The Seattle-based company previously settled out of court with Anderson over a similar video it distributed showing her having sex with her ex-husband, Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee. Irish boy band Westlife will rock Indonesia’s capital on Thursday under heavy security as police take no chances following the death of four fans in a stampede when another band toured Jakarta in March. Organizers said 2,000 security personnel including police would guard the 15,000-seat concert stadium in central Jakarta, along with 200 paramedics backed up by a number of ambulances and fire engines for the late afternoon event.
