Dashboard Confessional, Custom, Abandoned Pools Don't Need No Stinkin' Band

“One-man band”: when you hear that phrase you probably picture a dude on a street corner with a pair of cymbals between his knees, a drum on his back, some kazoos in his mouth and a guitar case full of quarters. Think again. While naming a band after yourself is fine and good for guys like Dave Matthews and Jon Spencer, some band names are actually just cryptic pseudonyms for a single, mad studio genius. The past year has seen an explosion of do-it-yourself-ers, including ex-Eels bassist Tommy Walter with his band Abandoned Pools, stone alone emo-ter Chris Carrabba of… Read more »

Ozzy Osbourne, System of a Down, P.O.D. and the new band featuring former Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell and Rage Against the Machine members Tim Commerford, Tom Morello and Brad Wilk are among the groups slated to take the main stage when this summer’s Ozzfest kicks off on July 6, Ozzy’s manager/wife, Sharon Osbourne, told MTV News on Tuesday. They’ll be joined by Drowning Pool and mainstage openers Zakk Wylde’s Black Label Society and Adema. Meanwhile, Rob Zombie, an Ozzfest main stage veteran, will headline the second stage, which this year promises to be larger, with a stripped-down set. A press… Read more »

R.E.M. Guitarist Battles Air-Rage Claim, Band Battles Paper Manufacturers

R.E.M.’s Peter Buck says he has no recollection of behavior on a Seattle-to-London flight that now finds him facing charges, including assault, in a London court, the BBC reports. Testifying on Wednesday (March 20), Buck claimed that after taking a sleeping pill on the April, 2001 flight, he felt “woozy” and “fear[ed] I had had a heart attack and was in a weird hospital in Disneyland.” When asked if he remembered details for which he is charged, the guitarist told the jury: “None whatsoever.” What Buck does remember is being in a police cell at London’s Heathrow Airport, saying he… Read more »

'O Brother' Soundtrack Fends Off B2K To Hold #1 Slot

It took the “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” soundtrack over a year on the charts to make it to #1, but now that it has, it can’t be stopped. For the second week in a row, the Grammys’ Album of the Year will take the top position on the Billboard 200 albums chart, selling nearly 150,000 copies, according to SoundScan figures released Wednesday (March 20). The self-titled debut album by boy band B2K will come in second place on next week’s chart, selling nearly 110,000 copies, and Alan Jackson will reclaim top-three status after falling into the still-formidable fifth slot… Read more »

Rock Steady Show Leaves No Doubt About '80s Revival – Review

If Republicans, “Dukes of Hazzard” reruns and an abundance of heavy metal weren’t enough to convince you, No Doubt’s Rock Steady road show leaves little doubt that the 1980s are back. On the tour’s opening night, the Orange County ska-popsters mined flavors from across the retro-’80s spectrum, mixing driving hardcore and rasta riddims with slap-bass funk, new wave synth and pop queen balladry. With a punked-out rhythm section, two dread-stylie horn players, a guitarist straight out of a Duran Duran video and bare-bellied, necktie-wearing Gwen-just-wanna-have-fun-Stefani up front, they even looked the part. The drum set glowed under the Memorial Auditorium’s… Read more »

The Ramones Ushered Into Rock Hall

They represented the anti-establishment, so it was a bit odd to see the Ramones so happy to become part of the music establishment as members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But for the remaining members of the punk rock originators – whose lead singer, Joey Ramone, died last year – Monday night’s induction at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel represented long-overdue respect for the band that helped revolutionize rock with their rapid-fire, guitar-heavy songs. “I’d like to congratulate myself, and thank myself, and give myself a big pat on the back,” joked Dee Dee Ramone. “Thank you Dee Dee,… Read more »

Grammys Tune Into Year of Turmoil

Forget J-Lo’s naval and Eminem’s foul mouth. The 44th annual Grammy Awards Wednesday had weightier issues to contend with as artists and performers sought to soothe the nation with humor and song after a year of turmoil within the music industry and in the United States. From heightened security, to performers’ songs and to host Jon Stewart’s jokes, the devastating attacks on America of Sept. 11 hovered in the background of the music industry’s most glamorous night. When Stewart came onstage at the Staples Center, he walked through a dummy metal detector, which gonged off and sent huge security guards… Read more »

U2 Fired Up for Unforgettable Night at Grammys

Will U2 find what it’s looking for on Wednesday, when it competes for eight Grammy Awards at the music industry’s biggest bash of the year? Or will the Irish rock quartet be rattled by folk musicians, soulful R&B divas and tireless troubadour Bob Dylan? Nothing is ever certain about the Grammys, whose industry voters frequently stun music fans with oddball choices, including last year’s album of the year prize to semi-retired jazz-rock recluses Steely Dan. In the past few years the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, which organizes the event, has tried to improve the awards’ image by… Read more »

Lopez Remix Disc Rides High

Familiar tunes made registers ring at the nation’s music retailers last week as a remix collection, three hits compilations, a reshaped album and a live disc were the top 40 debuts. Epic’s “J to Tha L-O!,” a potpourri of remixes of Jennifer Lopez songs from her first two albums, took the top slot on sales of 155,000 in the week ended Sunday, according to SoundScan figures. “Ultimate Manilow,” Arista’s collection of Barry Manilow hits from the 1970s and ’80s, made an impressive debut at No. 3 on sales of 113,000. Manilow’s profile has been increased recently: he released his first… Read more »
