Former first lady Lady Bird Johnson dies

Lady Bird Johnson, the former first lady who championed conservation and worked tenaciously for the political career of her husband, Lyndon B. Johnson, died Wednesday, a family spokeswoman said. She was 94. Johnson, who suffered a stroke in 2002 that affected her ability to speak, returned home late last month after a week at Seton Medical Center, where she’d been admitted for a low-grade fever. She died at her Austin home of natural causes about 5:18 p.m. EDT. Elizabeth Christian, the spokeswoman, said she was surrounded by family and friends. Even after the stroke, Johnson still managed to make occasional… Read more »

Non-Niche Radio Is Becoming the New Niche

New York – Radio’s playlist liberation movement hatched in late 2001 at a birthday party in Winnipeg, Manitoba. A radio was blasting when Howard Kroeger, director of operations and programing for CHUM Broadcasting’s Winnipeg stations, arrived at his friend’s 40th-birthday bash. It was a competitor’s classic rock station, and Kroeger used the occasion to conduct an informal focus group among the partygoers, most in their mid- to late 30s. Whenever Boston, the Cars, Meatloaf, Supertramp or some other ’70s staple came on, it got an overwhelming thumbs-up from the Molson-enhanced crowd. But there was a noticeable lack of enthusiasm when… Read more »

Rock Band Sparta Restless to Cover New Ground

Cleveland – Less than a year after rock band Sparta’s latest Geffen album, “Porcelain,” hit stores, singer/guitarist Jim Ward is feeling reflective about the past and rebellious about the future. “I felt like there was a momentum that for some reason has been lost,” Ward told Billboard.com. “I’m not a fan of looking back and saying what could have been. And to me, it’s really only about the music. I’ve never based anything on sales or success or how many people you play to or whatever, because I’ve seen different sides of that, and then they don’t equal happiness. “In… Read more »

Wallflowers Set To Bloom Again After Three Year Absence

The Wallflowers last CD, Red Letter Days, made little impact on the charts and their huge hit single “One Headlight” is a flickering memory. But the band will always get ink for the sole reason that Jakob Dylan is Bob Dylan’s son. At any rate, Rebel, Sweetheart will be the first release from the band since 2002. The group’s website lists a May 24 release date, with the first single “The Beautiful Side Of Somewhere” to be released to radio stations in the middle of March. The disc was recorded quickly in producer Brendan O’Brien’s Atlanta studio last year. The… Read more »

Ex-Alice In Chains Members Performing With Damageplan Singer

Forget the stage, it’s been almost a decade since Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney and Mike Inez – a.k.a. 75 percent of ’90s grunge icons Alice in Chains – have even been in the same room. Sure, they’ve jammed with each other in various permutations since Alice last played a show together (a 1996 taping of MTV’s “Unplugged”), but never all three together. So when they announced that they’d be taking the stage again this month, it had to be for a good reason. “We all saw what happened with the tsunamis in Southeast Asia. It was such an overwhelming tragedy,”… Read more »

Spears Handpicks A Brave New Britney

People sometimes say Britney is the new Madonna, but then who’s going to be the new Britney? Ms. Spears had a hand in deciding that for herself recently, when she helped cast “Brave New Girl,” an ABC Family film adapted from the book she wrote with her mom. The story, adapted from Lynne and Britney Spears’ book “A Mother’s Gift,” is based on the singer’s life but is fictionalized a bit so that it becomes more about the relationship between the mother and daughter than the rise of Spears’ star. In the film, the Britney character, named Holly, wants to… Read more »

Dixie Chicks, Sony Close to Deal

After 10 months of legal wrangling, the Dixie Chicks are expected to sign a new deal soon with Sony Music Entertainment, according to Billboard magazine. Sony has been home for the Texas trio for the past five years, but recent rumors had the Chicks heading to Capitol Records. Last July, the group’s attorneys served Sony with notice that its contract was terminated “by reason of Sony’s material misconduct and material breaches.” The Chicks still owed five albums, so Sony responded with a lawsuit to keep the group from leaving. The cross-complaint called the Dixie Chicks’ charges “trumped up and baseless,”… Read more »

Megadeth Pack It In After Nearly 20 Years

The fourth track on Megadeth’s 2001 album, The World Needs a Hero, is “1000 Times Goodbye.” Written as a breakup song, its title is more meaningful now that after nine studio albums and nearly 20 years, Megadeth have bid the world farewell. Frontman Dave Mustaine made the announcement Wednesday (April 3) in a written statement. “For the time being, I have decided to exit Megadeth and explore other areas of the music business,” he said. Mustaine’s decision was triggered by a series of episodes that date back to the beginning of the year. In January, he relapsed after over a… Read more »

Mest, Unwritten Law Rock Houston – Review

There was no floor collapsing this time, and the only damage was the broken red guitar belonging to Mest’s lead singer, Tony Lovato. Mest and Unwritten Law played to a sold out crowd last Wednesday in Houston, Texas, and although entertaining, it is also a little frightening for an audience who didn’t exactly know what to expect when a musician expresses his temper on stage. During their fifty minute set, afraid that he was going to get hurt, Lovato warned crowd surfers to watch where they were landing and to not hit his microphone stand. As luck would have it,… Read more »

Puddle of Mudd Singer Arrested

The lead singer of the rock group Puddle of Mudd was arrested for allegedly fighting with his fiancee. Wes Scantlin, 29, of Kansas City, Mo., and Michelle Rubin, 31, of Los Angeles, both were arrested Sunday for investigation of domestic violence and booked at the Ventura County jail. They were released after posting $20,000 bond each. Scantlin apparently was en route to shoot a music video when he began fighting with Rubin around 8:30 a.m. on the shoulder of Highway 126 in nearby Piru, authorities said. Several people called authorities by cell phone to report seeing a man forcing a… Read more »
