Brooklyn-born rapper Jay-Z’s latest LP, “Blueprint,” led a torrent of new releases at the top of the album charts this week as America’s record buyers continued to shop despite Sept. 11’s terrorist attacks. The Island/Def Jam release flew off shelves last week, shifting nearly 427,000 units, according to data compiled by SoundScan. Sales of “Blueprint” were powered by the near-ubiquity of its first single, “H.O.V.A. (Izzo),” on both urban radio and music television. Clear Channel has identified 150 songs that are considered to be “lyrically inappropriate” for airplay in the wake of the terror attacks carried out in the U.S. on Tuesday, September 11. A Clear Channel spokesperson has confirmed that the list has been circulated among its stations across the country. The lyrical content targeted by the list includes any references to death, flying, September, or general destruction. The popular (and highly political) band Rage Against The Machine received the dubious honor of having their entire catalogue on the list. A rare revision by music tracking firm SoundScan has catapulted Los Angeles hard rock band System of a Down to No. 1 on the U.S. pop album charts, the group’s publicist said Sunday. The group’s second album, “Toxicity,” had originally debuted at No. 2 with sales of 170,000 units when data for the week ended Sept. 9 were issued Wednesday morning. R&B singer Alicia Keys’ “Songs In A Minor” was No. 1 with 192,000 units. System Of A Down will play a free show for its local fans in a Hollywood parking lot on the eve of the release date of its second album, Toxicity, which arrives in stores September 4. The hometown show, being billed as a “thank you” to System’s local fans, will take place across the street from the Hollywood club Vinyl at 5 p.m. on September 3. System and co-headliners Slipknot kick off their Pledge Of Allegiance Tour in Chicago on September 14.

The metal/hardcore/hip-hop group will release its sixth studio LP, the thirteen-track Uncivilization, September 11th on Sanctuary Records. Disturbed is finding some new challenges now that it has moved from its spot as the OzzFest second-stage headliner to a role as support act on the main stage. The group made the switch after an estimated 20,000 fans swarmed the second stage on the tour’s opening day in Disturbed’s hometown of Chicago last month (June 8). It was heavy metal heaven Saturday at the sun-baked Blockbuster Bowl as an estimated 50,000-plus headbangers took in this year’s 12-hour-long edition of OzzFest, featuring a strong roster of young rock outfits and headlined by the granddaddy of metal bands, Black Sabbath.
