Bjork's Pit, Beck's Set Among Few Surprises At Risk-Free Coachella – Review

To the left, a full moon illuminated a row of palm trees swaying in a mellow breeze as the Beta Band played their melodic pop. To the right, a red sun set over a gorgeous mountain range as Siouxsie and the Banshees wrapped up their first festival performance in more than seven years. Ahead, DJ Z-Trip captivated a titanic tent overflowing with dancers by marrying Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” and Rage Against the Machine’s “Testify.” It was a stereophonic moment of musical bliss. It was Coachella in a nutshell. The third annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival took over… Read more »

Swedish Punks the Hives Set to Hit America

Swedish punk export The Hives, who have stormed the British singles chart this year, are spreading their infectious thrashy sound to the United States, their label, Burningheart Records, said Friday. Along with retro-punk contemporaries The Strokes and the White Stripes, the Swedish rebels have swept onto the British alternative scene this spring with their apoplectic stage show and shiny white dancing shoes. “An offer came from Warner Brothers and Sire, which we’ve accepted,” Mudda of Burningheart told Reuters. “It’s a distribution, promotion and marketing agreement and they’ll start touring the States in May.” The Hives emerged from the small industrial… Read more »

N.E.R.D. Lay Down Tour Dates, Despite Earlier Pledge To Stay Off Road

There’s no money like show money – just ask your favorite performer. Where else can you make tens of thousands of dollars for 90 minutes (or less) of work? Apparently somebody has hipped the guys of N.E.R.D. to this and they have decided to go out on the road in support of their LP, In Search Of…, for 12 dates this spring. In March, one third of the trio, Chad Hugo, said he and his musical mates had no intention of doing any concerts, affirming that their album was done just for “fun” and that the group didn’t consider itself… Read more »

Ballin' Boys No Good Ready To Come Off The Bench

When the Florida Marlins won the 1997 World Series, it was No Good’s remix of Luke Campbell’s “Raise the Roof” that blasted from the system at Pro Player Stadium. When the Miami Hurricanes won the national college football championship earlier this year, No Good’s “Ballin’ Boy” served as their theme song. As if that wasn’t enough to cement this particular sports-and-hip-hop connection, ESPN picked up “Ballin’ Boy” to play over its March Madness spots during this year’s NCAA hoops tournament. And No Good capped things off by performing the single – already a club staple in their hometown of Miami… Read more »
