Korn Whip Out Maggots, Flames, Crucifix-Emblazoned Dress At NY Concert – Review

Mega-nü-metal bands are kinda like Microsoft. Every time they unveil a product, it’s gotta be more advanced than the last, and each new offering is accompanied with a celebration that upstages the one before. On November 15, 1999, as Korn prepared to release their fourth album, Issues, the band played a rock show at the legendary Apollo Theatre in the Harlem neighborhood of New York, a site usually foreign to rock shows. On Monday night, to christen the release of their new disc, Untouchables, the band simulcast a one-hour concert from the Hammerstein Ballroom to 40 movie theaters across the… Read more »

Seventies Rock A Big Part Of Eminem's Show

Last week Eminem was a little uneasy about the fact that bootlegging had pressured Interscope to release his much-hyped The Eminem Show way ahead of schedule. Would such a hasty move screw up his game plan? (See “Eminem Show Moved Up Again – Album In Stores Sunday”). Well, 1.6 million records sold later, Em can relax – not that he was really sweating how many units he was gonna move. “I don’t ever buy into the pressure of trying to top my last album for record sales,” he said, cruising around Manhattan on top of a double-decker bus. “The pressure… Read more »

The collaboration is a reunion of sorts for the three acts, who played a medley of “Walk This Way,” “Rock Box” and “King of Rock” at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards. The first date of the tour is August 13 in Holmdel, New Jersey, at the PNC Bank Arts Center, and additional shows have been announced for August 22 and 24 in Mansfield, Massachusetts, at the Tweeter Center and… Read more »

Rob Zombie's Ramones Tribute LP Just Waiting For Metallica

Metallica have yet to settle on a Ramones cover to lend to a forthcoming tribute LP to the pioneering punks; perhaps “I Can’t Make It on Time” would be an apt selection. A contribution from the heavy-metal stalwarts is all that co-producer Rob Zombie is waiting on to sign off on the tracks for We’re a Happy Family, which he hopes will hit stores in August. “It’s almost done. We’re just waiting for Metallica to finish their song,” Zombie said while walking the red carpet Saturday at the MTV Movie Awards. Metallica’s delay is not for lack of enthusiasm. After… Read more »

Ozzfest Gets Czech Republic Roaring – Review

Strahov Stadium has had it all – communist rallies, anti-globalization protests, gymnastics exhibitions, drive-through movies and, now, Ozzfest. The crumbling structure, which stands as the largest stadium in the world per square foot, lent itself well to Ozzy Osbourne and his latest touring comrades, who hit the venue Thursday night for the seventh stop on the metal tour. With their stage parked in the middle of the field, the hard rockers used only half of the 200,000-capacity stadium, carving out an almost cozy cradle for Bohemia’s metalheads within the concrete monolith. While the tour got off to a less-than-grand beginning… Read more »

David Lee Roth Shakes It In Spandex, Sammy Hagar Bashes Eddie At Tour Debut – Review

The pervading feeling between dueling former Van Halen frontmen David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar may never be love, but fans showed a lot of it Wednesday at Blossom Music Center. Vintage Van Halen T-shirts peppered the fiery crowd. Fortysomething women fashioned the Van Halen symbol with their hands as they shook their shoulders to songs such as “5150” and “Panama.” A group of teenage boys wrote with marker “f– Eddie” on their arms, referring, of course, to VH guitarist Eddie Van Halen. The admiration was mutual between the crowd and Roth and Hagar. Mop-haired Hagar opened the show at… Read more »

311 to get the Teargas & Plateglass treatment

311 are about to get the remix treatment from underground / hip hop production team Teargas and Plateglass. Teargas & Plateglass will add their signature dark ambient dub vibe to the track “Amber” and according to the duo, “take it very very down”. Alternative rock act 311 formed in 1990 and by 1995 had sold 3 million copies of their “Blue” album. “Amber” is from their new album “From Chaos”. Teargas and Plateglass are known for their series of remixes for a bizarre and disjointed list of artists who commissioned their services for a sound falling somewhere between the dope… Read more »

White Stripes Deliver Dirty-Kneed Blues Rock At Hometown Show – Review

A sold-out suburban Detroit crowd showed its love for the red and white Wednesday at the Royal Oak Music Theatre by overzealously welcoming home the rock duo White Stripes. Fans punched their fists in the air and screamed heartily as singer/guitarist Jack White began the show in true rock star fashion – by dropping to his knees for an introductory blistering guitar solo from “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground,” the opening track from the White Stripes’ breakthrough album, White Blood Cells. “Good evening, children,” Jack said to the crowd. “My name is Jack White and this is my big… Read more »
