Pearl Jam Uses WAM!NET for Mastering "Bootleg" CDs


WAM!NET, a global provider of shared content management and delivery services today announced that Pearl Jam is using WAM!NET services to deliver recordings of their 2003 Riot Act World Tour concerts to mastering and replication facilities to create “bootleg” CDs that can be ordered online from www.pearljambootlegs.com and delivered to fans within seven to ten days of each performance. Music Biz Files Piracy Suits Vs. 18 Retailers


The Recording Industry Assn. of America, the trade group of the major U.S. record labels, said Monday it has filed suit against 18 retail businesses for selling pirated CDs. The lawsuits, which were filed last month in Texas, Florida and New York, mark the latest move by the recording industry to combat piracy and declining record sales. The businesses subject to the litigation include gas stations, convenience stores, grocery markets and small music stores that the RIAA claims “were trying to make a quick buck by selling pirated music on the side.” The RIAA began sending legal notices to many… Read more »

Best Buy Sheds Troubled Musicland Group


Electronics retailer Best Buy Co. said Monday it has shed its troubled Musicland Group, turning it over to Sun Capital Partners, a Florida-based private investment company. Best Buy shares rose. Sun Capital Partners paid no cash but assumed all of Musicland’s liabilities including its lease obligations. Musicland operates around 1,100 Media Play, Sam Goody and Suncoast stores across the country. Best Buy said in March that it planned to sell the group. Richfield-based Best Buy paid nearly $700 million for Minnetonka-based Musicland two years ago, but the group failed to meet Best Buy’s expectations, especially in consumer electronics sales.
