Lavigne Cashing in on DVD Boom


Arista Records and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment have joined forces to release music DVDs, beginning with the Nov. 4 launch of Avril Lavigne’s “My World,” featuring a concert, a behind-the-scenes featurette, five music videos, and a six-song bonus audio CD that includes four unreleased tracks. Beyond File-Sharing, a Nation of Copiers


The week the music industry brought suit against 261 users of Internet file-sharing services, Donald L. McCabe was in St. Louis to talk about a different form of digital copying. Mr. McCabe, a Rutgers University professor, has made a career of studying the cheating of American high school and college students. His most recent study found that cheating was spreading almost like file-sharing. Of more than 18,000 students surveyed, 38 percent said they had lifted material from the Internet for use in papers in the last year. Dave Matthews Band to Rock Central Park


The day after Dave Matthews releases his RCA solo debut, “Some Devil,” the Dave Matthews Band will play a benefit show in New York’s Central Park that is expected to draw upwards of 100,000 people. Full details of the Sept. 24 event will be announced Friday (Sept. 12). America Online is sponsoring the show and is using it to hype the newest version of its software, AOL 9.0. Singer-Songwriter Warren Zevon Dies at 56


Singer-songwriter Warren Zevon, who battled death with the same twisted sense of humor found in his songs “Life’ll Kill Ya,” “Werewolves of London” and “Excitable Boy,” has lost his yearlong fight against lung cancer at age 56. Britney Spears debuted the first full song off her upcoming record Thursday on ABC’s “NFL Kickoff Live,” but despite the primetime unveiling, “Me Against the Music” isn’t necessarily going to be the new disc’s first single. XM Stock Sale May Fund New Satellite


The company has priced a public offering of approximately 11.3 million shares of class A common stock – with expected net proceeds of around $150 million – that it will use to pay for construction of a new ground-spare satellite if its is unable to collect enough from its insurers in time to build the satellite. Universal Discounts CDs to Mixed Reaction


Universal Music Group’s strategy of lowering its CD prices is good news for music fans, but some traditional music retailers on Thursday worried the move may damage their business. A day after Universal announced a cut on the wholesale price of most of its CDs and an end to advertising discounts, retailers large and small began assessing how the new pricing plan would affect them. Fall HFStival Cancelled


A message on whfs.com annouced the cancellation of The Fall Edition of HFStival, which was to take place October 4. The message reads: “Due to scheduling conflict HFStival – The Fall Edition has been cacelled. Tickets can be refunded at place of purchase – or just hold on to ’em and we’ll see you next spring.” Sources indicate that Infinity Radio, corporate owners of WHFS, were unhappy with ticket sales for the event. Concerts in general have seen lower ticket sales this year. The annual HFStival was a two-day event, but was scaled back this year to only one day.

Coldplay, Good Charlotte And Duran Duran On VMA Awards


Coldplay turned out to be the big rock winners of Thursday’s (August 28) 20th Annual Video Music Awards, picking up three awards for “The Scientist” including best group video, best breakthrough video and best direction in a video.
