Eminem (real name: Marshall Mathers III) has received a visa from the Australian government to perform at a pair of concerts in the country next week. But along with the approval came a warning to respect the country’s values and its multicultural society. As previously reported, lawmakers and community groups opposed allowing the Grammy-winning rapper into the country with his group D12, saying his songs contain foul, violent, and racist lyrics demeaning to women and gays. D12, Eminem’s original Detroit rap crew, opened at number one with its debut release, Devil’sNight. The disc was produced by Eminem and prominently features the rhymes of the controversial hip-hopster. D12 (short for the Dirty Dozen) is the first group on Eminem’s Interscope-distributed Shady Records. “We made a pact years ago,” says Eminem. “Whichever one of us gets signed comes back for the rest.” For the week ending Sunday, Devil’s Night sold 371,000 copies, according to SoundScan. Radiohead’s highly anticipated fifth album posted the strongest first-week sales figures in the group’s history, but the mercurial British band failed to break the cycle of Staind’s album-chart dominance. “Amnesiac” (Capitol), the follow-up to Radiohead’s No. 1 debut “Kid A,” took second place this week, selling more than 231,000 copies, according to SoundScan data. Maybe they should call themselves Rage Against the Soundgarden. The three remaining members of Rage Against the Machine have created a new band with former Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell, the group’s publicist confirmed on Tuesday. Cornell will join guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk, formerly of the rock-rap fusion band. “They’ve written 20 songs together, the four of them, and Rick Rubin will be producing the recording,” said Lisa Markowitz of Epic Records. Ron Fair has been named president of A&M Records, Interscope Geffen A&M is expected to announce today. Fair comes to A&M from RCA, where he was senior vp A&R since 1993. The A&M presidency has been vacant since Interscope Geffen A&M was combined under chairman Jimmy Iovine in 1999 as a result of Universal Music Group’s merger with PolyGram. Fair will be charged with rebuilding the label that was started by Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss during the early 1960s and sold to PolyGram in 1989.
