Lenny Kravitz Tickles Pink For Summer Tour

Lenny Kravitz must be a firm believer in the theory that says a simple, direct approach is most effective. Why else would he call a tour to support his latest album, the rather uncomplicatedly titled Lenny, anything other than the decidedly descriptive Lenny Live? For his first full-scale North American road trip in almost three years, Kravitz, following a European tour and fueled by his current single, “Stillness of Heart,” is set to visit 33 cities beginning July 12 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, according to his publicist. The nearly two-month jaunt winds down September 2 in Phoenix. The last time… Read more »

BMG to Test Protected CDs on Industry Insiders

A new batch of compact discs designed to defeat Napster-style piracy is coming soon to record-industry insiders. BMG, one of the world’s five major labels, said on Monday it would start issuing promotional CDs – the free discs distributed to critics, retailers and other insiders weeks before the official release – with technological countermeasures to prevent copying. The major labels, which include Vivendi Universal, Sony Music, EMI Group, AOL Time Warner’s Warner Music and Bertelsmann AG’s BMG, hope that copy protection measures will prevent users from “ripping,” or copying the music into the easily traded MP3 format. “The first benefit… Read more »

Anti-Pop Consortium Do The Math: Beats/Lyrics=Heat

According to their folklore, electronic rap act Anti-Pop Consortium came together to “disturb the equilibrium.” With left-of-center releases like 2000’s Tragic Epilogue and last year’s Shopping Carts Crashing, lyricists Priest, Beans and M. Sayyid and DJ E. Blaize have gotten off to a pretty good start. But they’re nowhere near done. Their third full-length album for Warp Records, Arrhythmia, hit stores April 2 and, according to Beans, is their best yet. “I think it’s a nice middle ground between the stuff that we were doing on Tragic to where we’re going,” Beans said, stroking his red mohawk. “It’s a bit… Read more »

Alien Ant Farm Drop Comedy For 'Attitude'

They spoofed Michael Jackson in their video for “Smooth Criminal,” and they cavorted with cartoon hot dogs in “Movies.” But anyone expecting Alien Ant Farm to aim for the funny bone again with their new video, “Attitude,” will find themselves somewhat short of giggles. And considering that the clip was directed by the Malloys, who have shot quirky rib-ticklers like Blink-182’s “First Date” and Foo Fighters’ “Breakout,” it comes as quite a surprise. “The song is kind of somber and has a Latin feel to it, so we couldn’t see much joking in the video,” vocalist Dryden Mitchell said during… Read more »

Sevendust Crank Out Clips, Prepare For 'Golf Tour' With Creed

Now that their onstage cred is firmly established, Sevendust are looking to branch out beyond performance-based videos. The group shot two conceptual videos late last month in Toronto with director Noble Jones, who has previously worked with Roland Gift and Default. The first was for “Live Again,” the next single from the band’s latest album, Animosity. The clip concerns a girl who gets thrown out of her house by her father, who pushes her out the front door as her mother and neighbors stand by watching. “I’ve always been fascinated and disturbed by young people and children that get thrown… Read more »

P.O.D. To Compete In International Ping-Pong Tournament – In Next Video

P.O.D.’s next single, “Boom,” stands ready to blow up at radio next week, and while the song’s accompanying video isn’t exactly a sing-along, viewers will be able to follow the bouncing ball. A table tennis tournament sets the tone for the clip, which was filmed by director Gavin Bowden (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lifehouse) Tuesday and Wednesday in San Diego. Set in the Cox Arena, the quartet is shown competing in the ping-pong play-offs against teams from China, Sweden and France. The video is expected to surface later this month. “Boom” was selected to be P.O.D.’s next radio salvo in… Read more »

Cold Singer Relates To Road-Weary Wrestlers

When the creators of the upcoming WWF album Tough Enough 2 asked Cold to contribute a track, frontman Scooter Ward was baffled. He thought, what did his music – riddled with gloomy, nihilist imagery and creepy underpinnings – have in common with the muscle-bound, over-the-top world of pro wrestling? Then it occurred to him that being in a band on the run and flying off the top turnbuckle night after night had some similarities after all. “I was writing a song for my kid at the same time,” Ward said last week. “Leaving home all the time, never being here… Read more »

Composer Addresses Eminem Suit

“I only heard it quite recently,” says French composer Jacques Loussier. “In fact, my son had heard it and told me that was my music played on this record, so that is why I’ve been listening to it. And, of course, it’s so obvious that it was a copy of my music.” Loussier is speaking of Eminem’s “Kill You,” a track from the rapper’s 8 million-copy selling The Marshall Mathers LP that Loussier claims contains music lifted from his own composition, “Pulsion.” Loussier filed suit against the rapper and Interscope Records last week in federal court in New York City,… Read more »
