Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. announced today that five additional major recording artists have agreed to provide music and video content for the upcoming rhythm-action game, Amplitude, developed exclusively for the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system. Expanding upon a top-tier music roster covering hip-hop, rap, electronica and rock, the newly signed bands include blink 182, P.O.D., Mekon, Freezepop and Dieselboy. One of London’s most famous music venues, which in its heyday in the 1960s played host to The Who, David Bowie and the Rolling Stones, is for sale, its administrators said Thursday. The Marquee Club, which in the 1970s was the epicenter of the punk explosion, ran into financial difficulties after its high-profile relaunch last fall, said a spokeswoman for administrator BDO Stoy Hayward. “We’re looking for someone in the music business who can capitalize on the Marquee brand and keep running it as a live venue,” she said. Techno artist Moby was attacked by two men while signing autographs outside a nightclub following a radio station-sponsored holiday concert, police said. According to police and witnesses, Moby, whose real name is Richard M. Melville, was approached by the men about 1 a.m. Thursday outside the Paradise Rock Club. One of the men punched Moby in the back of the head and on the right side of his face, breaking the singer’s glasses and cutting and bruising his face. The upcoming Nirvana collection, much-hyped due to the inclusion of the previously unreleased “You Know You’re Right,” will feature 14 songs overall, according to the Universal Music sales catalog. Cable TV made some music news Wednesday, with HBO locking up a live performance of the Rolling Stones in January, and VH1 signing Pink, David Bowie and Santana to perform at the 2002 “VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards” Oct. 15. HBO will cover the Stones at one of the last U.S. stops on their current “Licks” world tour, a Jan. 18 event at Madison Square Garden. It will be the Stones’ first live concert for TV. Gus Dudgeon, a respected music producer who worked on many of Elton John’s hit recordings, died Sunday in a car crash in western England. He was 59. Dudgeon was killed when his car veered off a major highway and overturned near Reading, west of London. He and a woman traveling in the car, believed to be his wife, were pronounced dead at the scene. The woman’s identity could not immediately be confirmed.
