Avril Lavigne, Sum 41, and Sarah McLachlan are just a few of the artists who will help their home country of Canada, and especially the city of Toronto, by performing a benefit concert at Toronto’s Skydome and Air Canada Centre on Saturday (June 21). Canada is the only country outside of Asia which has had any SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) related deaths. Fear of the disease has cost Canada, and in particular Toronto, millions in tourist dollars. The concert’s promoters hope the event will boost the city’s economy and serve as a symbol to the rest of the world… Read more »

Lillix, "Falling Uphill" – Review

Talented kids living in the middle of nowhere Canada get bored, learn some instruments and write some songs. Throw in several accomplished producers (Linda Perry, Phillip Stier and The Matrix) overseeing some of the latest in North American pop, and thus is born Lillix – a quartet of teenage and young twentysomethings who sing about angst and life with eternal girl-powered optimism. “Falling Uphill” is a solid but not groundbreaking debut, and one that will please the teen set – even those looking for some edgier bubblegum. A blend of tight harmonies (the track “Quicksand” is a great example) and… Read more »

While the World Health Organization said that it believes the worst of severe acute respiratory syndrome is over in Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong and Vietnam – which got a clean bill of health on Monday for being the first nation to contain the virus – SARS is still affecting tour and promotional plans for many artists who were set to visit those regions. The Rolling Stones were the first to pull out of Asian concerts – their first-ever concerts in China – when news of the disease broke in March, though they did play two shows in Singapore. Avril Lavigne Stages Successful Revolt At Tour Opener – Review

Demurely clad in a simple yellow T-shirt and black bondage pants, Avril Lavigne didn’t need to frolic about in choreographed routines to impress her minions. A simple rock show, devoid of flash and fancy moves, demonstrated her back-to-basics intentions, and the audience, composed mostly of straight-haired teenage girls at their very first concert (with chaperones, of course), responded like it was watching the Beatles on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in 1964. “I touched her hand, the one with the blue wristband!” gushed Madison, 10, from Toronto. It wasn’t the last time she and the dozens like her rushed down the… Read more »

Country star Shania Twain didn’t get her wish when she won three prizes at the 32nd annual Juno Awards, Canada’s equivalent of the Grammys, over the weekend. After winning the Country Recording of the Year nod at the untelevised ceremony in Ottawa on Saturday, she had said she would prefer not to win anything at the next day’s televised event because she wanted to concentrate on her role as host. Alas, she ended up nabbing the Artist of the Year and Fan Choice Awards the next day. “I’m here to host the show and perform,” Twain said Saturday at a… Read more »
