Nickelodeon Forming Label With Jive Records

Children’s television network Nickelodeon is partnering with Jive Records – home of teen pop sensations ‘N Sync, Backstreet Boys, and Britney Spears – to create Nick Records. “Music plays a vibrant part in the lives of our audience,” said Albie Hecht, president of Nickelodeon’s film and entertainment departments. “We are excited to launch a record label that will once again put Nickelodeon in the leadership position in entertainment for kids and tweens.” Cross-promotion will be a key theme for Nick Records; one of its artists, Nick Cannon, will star in his own series for the Nickelodeon network this fall, and… Read more »

Aaron, Nick Carter To Team Up At Teen Choice Awards

Judging by the performers announced so far for the Teen Choice Awards, this year’s show is shaping up to be a veritable Carter Family reunion – and we don’t mean the legendary first family of country music. Rather, Aaron and Nick of teen pop’s gifted Carter clan will perform together at the third annual awards ceremony, to be broadcast August 12 on Fox from Universal City, California’s Universal Amphitheatre, according to a spokesperson from Seventeen magazine, one of the show’s sponsors. While the duet will mark the siblings’ first televised performance together, the brothers have been seeing a lot of… Read more »

'NSYNC Likely To Outsell Everyone But Themselves

Celebrity sales projected to fall just short of record set by group’s No Strings Attached. “Dirty pop” is turning out to be huge for ‘NSYNC, though maybe not as huge as last year’s model. Four national retail chains said Wednesday (July 25) that based on first-day sales of ‘NSYNC’s new album, Celebrity, projected first-week numbers appeared to be falling just short of those for the group’s No Strings Attached, which sold 2.4 million copies in its first week last March – the highest first-week sales of the SoundScan era. But Celebrity, released Tuesday, does seem to be on course to… Read more »

Pop Acts Put Out Records Faster

Time was, pop stars who hit it big would ride out the success of an album and then lie low for awhile, presumably restoring their creative energies and also whetting the public’s appetite for the next record. Not any more. Today’s acts – wary of fickle fans and short attention spans – are pumping out albums in quick succession so as not to lose the spotlight to someone else. “Unfortunately right now, you have to just hit while you’re hot,” said teen pop starlet Jessica Simpson, who released her self-titled second album in June, a year and a half after… Read more »

Review: 'N Sync On Overblown Odyssey

It is a visual overload, this PopOdyssey tour starring the reigning champs of the pop music marketplace, ‘N Sync. There are films and explosions and dancers and mechanical bulls and more costumes than songs – it looks exhausting for performer and young viewer alike. It’s a feast of production values, a sign that every dime went into something the audience can see and, taken collectively, the show is a better marketing tool than a dozen videos. PopOdyssey is flat-out a vehicle to expose new songs to their hard-core audience and give a dynamic and visceral association to the bulk of… Read more »

But in the past few months, Pearlman has hit some sour notes. About 15 key executives and staffers, including company vice presidents, the chief operating officer, a tour manager, accountants and publicists, have left or been laid off. MTV Plans 2nd Round Of 'Becoming'

MTV is planning a second round of episodes of its new documentary show “Becoming,” in which fans “become” their favorite musicians. The cable channel picks people up in a limousine, gives them makeovers, teaches them choreography and lets them recreate their favorite videos. Cameras capture the transformation along the way, then MTV shows the finished product. Players are chosen from casting calls, fan Web sites, karaoke bars and college campuses. In the first series of episodes, which started airing last month on Tuesday nights, fans became Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, Jennifer Lopez and Blink-182, among others. New episodes will… Read more »
