The largest North American power blackout in history plunged more than 50 million people into darkness in a 9,600-square-mile swath from the East Coast to the Midwest and Southern Canada on Thursday, affecting everything from subways in New York to the water supply in Cleveland. Folds Plans Three Online EPs


Leading up to the 2004 date targeted for the release of his sixth album, Ben Folds will release a three-EP series of new material online. The first set, Speed Graphic, will be available starting tomorrow at Folds’ Web site, attackedbyplastic.com. The set features a cover of the Cure’s “In Between Days” as well as four new songs, “Protection,” “Dog,” “Wandering” and “Give Judy My Notice.” The second EP, called Sunny 16, will be ready in September, and the third, yet-to-be-titled set is scheduled for November. Napster, Publishers Reach Preliminary Settlement


American songwriters and music publishers have reached preliminary agreement with the on-line file sharing service Napster to settle the class-action lawsuit currently pending in federal court in California. The agreement includes terms under which the songwriters and music publishers will license their music to Napster’s new membership-based service.
