Attacks Sent Ozzy Osbourne To Church

Hellraising rock star Ozzy Osbourne sought solace in a Manhattan church after witnessing the Sept. 11 attacks, while Alanis Morissette clung to her boyfriend all day in Los Angeles, according to the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine. Grim rocker Lou Reed watched the World Trade Center towers burn from the roof of his Greenwich Village apartment, and girlfriend Laurie Anderson was one of the few artists to perform that night. The magazine compiled a round-up of rock-star reactions to the tragedies, and found that many were defiantly trying to get back to business as usual. “During times of war,… Read more »

A Clear Channel spokesperson has confirmed that the list has been circulated among its stations across the country. The lyrical content targeted by the list includes any references to death, flying, September, or general destruction. The popular (and highly political) band Rage Against The Machine received the dubious honor of having their entire catalogue on the list. Showbiz Issues Take Back Seat In D.C.

The nation’s capital became a ghost town Tuesday as Hollywood lobbyists and media functionaries absorbed the impact that twin terrorist attacks on Washington and Gotham will have on politics, showbiz and everyday life. Schedules that were jam-packed with hearings and meetings early Tuesday were erased by the end of the day. In the wake of an official declaration of a state of emergency, most Hollywood lobbyists headed home early. Entertainment reps in Washington are a tight crowd, even if they don’t always see eye to eye, so there were numerous phone calls back and forth to ensure that colleagues were… Read more »

Pop Artists To Rap Record Deals At Calif. Hearing

Courtney Love and Don Henley will lead a charge of pop artists at a hearing in the California state legislature on Wednesday to denounce what they claim are corrupt business practices by big recording companies. The hearing takes place against the backdrop of several bitter lawsuits against major labels by acts like Love and the Dixie Chicks, who allege “unconscionable” contracts and accounting practices by the recording conglomerates. The hearing at the Select Committee on the Entertainment Industry in Sacramento will focus specifically on California’s so-called “seven-year statute,” which restricts entertainers from being tied to any company for more than… Read more »

Don Henley's RIAA Alternative Gaining Steam

Maybe the Recording Industry Association of America had better watch its back. The Recording Artists Coalition – which counts founder Don Henley, Sheryl Crow, and Alanis Morissette among its members – is making strides toward becoming a formidable opponent. The RAC, which claims that the RIAA doesn’t always operate in the best interests of artists, has recently hired an executive director, laid out plans for offices in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., and folded another high-profile artists’ rights group under its wing. In March, Henley said the RAC boasted 57 high-profile members, including Billy Joel, Eric Clapton, and Bruce Springsteen.… Read more »

Anti-Piracy Org Splits From RIAA

Artist rights organization Artists Against Piracy has severed ties to its primary financial supporter, the Recording Industry Association of America. The split stems largely from Artists Against Piracy’s broader agenda. The organization plans to go beyond the scope of educating the public and representing artists on digital copyright piracy issues and take on broader artist rights issues vis-a-vis the record labels. “Artists Against Piracy is about protecting the artists’ rights in a digital space, but some of these rights are in conflict with the record industry,” said Noah Stone, executive director of Artists Against Piracy, which has had support from… Read more »
