It’s been a busy summer for our Rioters and they’re here to catch you up. Listen out for some new TV & movie recs including the swoon-worthy Red, White & Royal Blue, some entertainment drah-mah, and some throwbacks to American Born Chinese and The Power.
Old Feuds + New Flicks
Sherin and Julian kick off the show by giggling at the feuds between Disney and DeSantis, as well as Erykah Badu and DJ Akademiks. They also discuss the latest James Gunn rumors, while showing their support for the actors’ and writers’ strike.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper catch-up if our dynamic duo didn’t talk about all the cool stuff they’ve been binge-watching lately. They shout out Red, White & Royal Blue, They Cloned Tyrone, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Winning Time S2, and more great titles (make sure to read all their reviews on RIOT-US!). Sherin and Julian also share what shows they’re looking forward to, including The Changeling and One Piece. Sherin also talks about the new film Bottoms, saying, “Bottoms is a wild ride; satirical, profane, unexpected, queer, a tad violent, jaw-dropping, and all about young women finding their power. What I like most is it eschews what I call “hot pink glitter feminism” (not a Barbie reference). It isn’t a super-cutie-pie surface examination that covertly subverts its own themes underneath—instead, it defies expectation. This is a film we should definitely talk about.”
American Born Chinese
GGR revisits our conversation about American Born Chinese on Disney+. Alice Meichi Li joins Sherin to compare the series to the 2006 original graphic novel, diving deep into the themes, inspirations, and characters.
The Power feat. Interview with Naomi De Pear
If you haven’t seen The Power on Prime Video yet, WYD?! Okay, we forgive you—and we’re about to get you intrigued. Relive Renee’s conversation with the show’s executive producer Naomi De Pear about the storytelling and representation, the characters and their relationships, and how the show explores power dynamics.
