Relient K Escapes Fire

SOMERSET, Pa. — Members of rock band Relient K had a rude awakening on the Pennsylvania Turnpike at about 3:20 a.m. Thursday. Asleep on their tour bus, en route to a show in Illinois, they were roused by the bus driver yelling for them to exit the bus immediately. It was on fire. While the band — which includes Stark County natives Matt Thiessen and Matt Hoopes — and crew members escaped uninjured, the damage was extensive. Fire Chief Terry Shaffer of the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department said the fire started in the engine compartment located just below the rear… Read more »

Emo-Punk: Hair Metal's Second Coming

Recently, Maureen Callahan wrote a piece for the New York Post about Crush Management, the NYC cadre that shepherds the careers of Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, the Academy Is … , Boys Like Girls and Armor for Sleep (or, as Callahan puts it, “basically any band that a 13-year-old girl with a blog and a Hot Topic habit obsesses over”). Aside from providing readers with some genuinely bananas quotes from songwriter/ rock-and-roll vampire Butch Walker about credibility (especially considering this is on his résumé), the article is excellent primarily because it floats the hypothesis that the artists… Read more »

Paris Hilton Back to Jail in Hysterics

For a few hours on Friday (June 8), it looked like Paris Hilton wasn’t even going to show up for a hearing to determine whether she would be sent back to jail. And then, when she finally did make it to the courthouse, she probably wished she hadn’t. Judge Michael Sauer ordered Hilton back to jail, to serve out “the remainder of her sentence,” after a brief hearing, despite her lawyer’s pleas that a return would be “dangerous” to the heiress. The exact length of her stay was unclear at press time, though Sheriff Lee Baca, who released Hilton from… Read more »

Linkin Park Grows Up on New Album

“Hands Held High,” one of the most powerful songs on Linkin Park’s new album, includes lyrics about bombs blowing up mosques, a bumbling leader, high gas prices and general world confusion – an obvious missive against President Bush and the war in Iraq. Or maybe not. Tell that interpretation to Mike Shinoda, the rapper/musician who writes most of the lyrics for the blockbuster band, and you’ll get an earful on making assumptions about the group’s most adventurous album to date, “Minutes to Midnight.” “We’re not a political band. And I see some of the stuff that you’re referring to …… Read more »

Fall Out Boy Get Bloody — For Tour Contest

It’s not a stretch to say that on their epic climb to the top of the Billboard albums chart, Fall Out Boy have shed their fair share of blood, sweat and tears – spending nearly five years crisscrossing the country in vans, buses and airplanes will do that to you . But on next month’s tour, they’ll be focusing primarily on the red stuff. Taking a (pretty awesome) page from the Kiss playbook – or, more specifically, the Kiss comic book – FOB will be tapping their veins for a contest, one in which they’ll mix their own blood with… Read more »

New Order's Hook Drafts Stars for New Project

New Order bassist Peter Hook is gathering some famous friends to collaborate on his new project, Freebase. The group — which comprises Hook, former Smiths bassist Andy Rourke and former Stone Roses/current Primal Scream bassist Mani — will turn the mic over to some of Manchester, England’s best-known frontmen. “We’ve been working with some great singers. (The Charlatans’) Tim Burgess has done a vocal for us. (Oasis’) Liam Gallagher, I believe, is doing one (song), (Stone Roses’) Ian Brown and (Primal Scream’s) Bobby Gillespie,” Hook told Billboard.com. “We’re going to get them up on stage as well. It’s nice that… Read more »

Arctic Monkeys Take Two NME Music Awards

British bands swept the NME music awards on Thursday, with last year’s champions the Arctic Monkeys doing it again in 2007 with two more prizes. But the United States were also honored, with My Chemical Romance taking the Best International Band category and The Killers winning Best Video for “Bones.” “This is the verdict of the real passionate British music fans, the ones who keep the music scene alive at gigs up and down the country week-in and week-out,” said NME editor Conor McNicholas. “It’s a reflection of how strong the British music scene is that there’s so much to… Read more »

John Mayer Goes Out wth Alicia Keys

NEW YORK – With a guest appearance from Alicia Keys, sing-alongs galore and an intimate two-song acoustic performance on a small stage in the middle of the crowd, John Mayer’s sold-out performance Wednesday night delivered everything a headlining spot at Madison Square Garden should. After a strong opening set from Mat Kearney, Mayer’s show began with the venue darkened before the sounds of Mayer’s guitar drowned out the screams from younger members of the audience. A blue spotlight revealed him as he began “Belief” solo before being joined by the rest of his band. As the 90-minute set (consisting primarily… Read more »
