Fall Out Boy Wordsmith Puts Breakup Behind Him

When writing the lyrics for “From Under the Cork Tree,” Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, far right, shifted his focus from a romance gone horribly wrong to a more introspective vew of the world. After writing an album’s worth of lyrics about a girl who shattered his heart, Pete Wentz realized that the world is a bigger place than a cold-hearted woman and he needed to pen tunes that reflected that – a world where tsunamis could devastate parts of Asia, a war in Iraq could affect people on a global scale and the Molly Ringwald vs. Samantha Fox debate… Read more »

Dashboard Gives Props To Higher Power For Spidey Song

When the powers-that-be asked Dashboard Confessional’s frontman if he would pen a tune for the “Spider-Man 2” soundtrack, Chris Carrabba had just one question. And it wasn’t about money, deadlines, or a particular feel that they were looking for. “Do I get to see the movie early?” asked the admitted comic-book geek. After receiving an affirmative response to his query, the rest was all downhill. “I was a big fan of ‘Spider-Man,’ the comic-book, and I thought the first movie was brilliant,” Carrabba said. “Spider-Man is such an underdog, but he makes good. I always liked that.” Carrabba already had… Read more »

Something Corporate Head To 'Space' Via L.A., Plan Headlining Trek

The pressures on a frontman are fierce. Besides remembering the words and singing in key, you have to look cool. Keep the guitar slung low. Get close to the mic and sneer. Don’t be afraid to windmill. But what if you’re a singer without an axe to wield? Good luck trying to make like Pete Townshend with a piano, but somehow Andrew McMahon pulls it off. “I think it’s the whole idea of not trying to look cool,” he offered as an explanation of why he appears just the opposite when leading his band, Something Corporate. “I don’t think that… Read more »
